£2 Million Jackpot: Council Set to Revolutionise Youth Services

Sheffield City Council have received a £2 million grant from the Youth Investment Fund to build two new youth and community centres.

They are one of 16 organisations across England to receive the grant as part of a national programme worth £22 million.

Each new centre will be around 200m squared and will offer meeting rooms, youth spaces and accessible facilities for youth aged between 10 and 24. One will replace the current youth centre in Stannington Park and the other will be a brand new building in Winn Gardens, on the site of the former Middlewood tower block.

Kate Stewart, Youth Investment Fund Director for Social Investment Business, said: “This is great news for youth services and young people. Even more young people will have new opportunities to thrive in high quality youth centres in some of the most deprived parts of the country.

“We are thrilled that Sheffield City Council is one of the youth services benefiting from the Youth Investment Fund. The Modern Methods of Construction programme is an exciting and innovative project, and its fast-paced turnaround means that young people will soon be reaping the benefits.”

Modern Methods of Construction are known for their shorter on-site building time, usually around 12 weeks, and creating less waste.

The buildings will aim to support more young people by giving them access to employment advice, safeguarding, youth justice, family and health support, and school and college advice.

Councillor Richard Williams of the Stannington area said the news is ‘fantastic’ and the centres will be ‘great for youth provision in Stannington’.

He also wanted to acknowledge the ‘tremendous job’ that local community groups have done so far, and said to expect the Stannington Park centre in the early summer.

The centre in Winn Gardens is expected to be finished later on in the year, as it is a brand new building.

In the last financial year, the Youth Investment Fund has also given Sheffield City Council almost £3 million to fund renovations of other youth clubs such as All Saints Youth Club on Lyons Close, Grimesthorpe, and Tinsley Youth Club, on Norborough Road, Tinsley.

They have also received a £10,000 grant from the Youth Investment Fund for planning and pre-construction work.
