Sheffield going quackers for infamous duck race to boost cash for playground

Friends of the Porter Valley are having a duck race on the April 6 at Endcliffe Park.

This is a fundraising event that is hoping to raise £10,000 in hope to improve Forge Dam playground.

The secretary and coordinator of the duck race, Glynis Jones is expecting the race to be a fun event for the community to get together.

She said: “It is a fundraising event but I see it as a nice thing to do for the community.”

Rubber ducks can be bought from the stand for £1 or you can bring your own.

The race will start at 2pm and run till 3:30 pm. Owners of the winning ducks have the opportunity to claim a variety of prizes that have been donated from local businesses, including vouchers up to £100, two match day tickets to Sheffield United and many more.

Friends of the Porter Valley consist of 800 members and have 200 volunteers who run local events and work on conservation projects in conjunction with the council to benefit the community.

Ms Jones said they have had 16 duck races so far with more and more volunteers helping each year.

The race will release 2,500 numbered plastic ducks into the river porter just below the weir above Holme Wheel Dam.

The first 40 to arrive at the finish line will be captured in a wire tube and then be verified by the committee. The owners of the winning ducks will be contacted a few days after the race.

She said: “We do various things in the valley, each year we look at something we think deserves our attention.”

Several members have said that it would be a good thing to spend the money on a new climbing frame and seesaw to replace the old ones that had been removed. Although, this decision will depend on how much money they raise from the duck race.
