Woman’s campaign to fix dangerous potholes in Sheffield roads

A councillor has talked about her community campaign which has seen her tirelessly work to fix the issue of potholes in Sheffield.

Crumbling roads in Sheffield have been an ongoing issue for many years and have left residents feeling unsafe.

NetherEdge and Sharrow Councillor Nighat Basharat has been determined to make a change.

Coun Basharat said: “As a resident of Netheredge and Sharrow, I see the pothole issue myself, I walk and drive around the area and have witnessed the dangers they can cause.

“I regularly report potholes to Streets Ahead, follow up on repairs, and raise wider road condition concerns with the Head of Highways.”

She said: “I have also raised wider concerns from residents, including the risk of damage to vehicles and bicycles, and consistently encourage the community to report potholes so that we can address them promptly and keep our roads safe.”

Coun Basharat communicates with residents through email, social media and going out into the community.

She said: ” I often share photos and videos of road conditions and encourage residents to report potholes directly to me or through the council reporting system.

“Over the past months I have raised a number of cases based on issues residents have reported to me and ones I have identified while out in the community.”

An example is the potholes on Sheldon Roads crossroads, she said: “I followed up with the committee chair to make sure they were aware of the seriousness of Sheldon Road crossroads and requested the repair be prioritised, and if possible completed sooner due to its very poor condition.”

Road safety and conditions of the roads are Councillor Basharat’s main concerns, she said: ” Potholes can damage vehicles, cause accidents, and pose a risk to cyclists, pushchair users, wheelchair users, and pedestrians. They can also affect residents’ wellbeing because of noise and disruption.”

However, one of the main obstacles she faces is prioritization, she said: “The highways team has to assess which potholes are most dangerous and fix those first, so sometimes other repairs take longer.

“My goal is to continue raising issues quickly, making sure dangerous potholes are prioritised.”

Coun Basharat said: “I also want to ensure our roads are maintained to a high standard, that they are not neglected, and that preventative measures are put in place to avoid the issues we are currently facing.”
