Changes have been proposed to redesign Burngreave roads in a bid to make them safer – and the council is urging locals to share their opinions on the plans.
The proposed plans centre around ensuring safer areas for walking, wheeling, cycling, and buses. The council aims to ‘begin construction in early 2027’.
This would involve changes such as building continuous walkways and reducing high speed traffic in the area by closing certain junctions and introducing parking restrictions – including restricting on-pavement parking.
The consultation period for the proposed plans opened on the 26th of February and will continue until the 9th of April, with two drop-ins being held on the 14th and 17th of March.
Cllr Ben Miskell, Chair of the Transport, Regeneration and Climate Policy Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “These changes will help people move around more easily, whether they’re walking, wheeling, cycling or catching the bus and will bring the area in line with the rest of the city as we continue our ambition of giving people genuine options when it comes to how they move around.”
The plans target two school areas, Pye Bank Primary School and Astrea Academy, as there are proposed changes to Nottingham and Rock Street.
Rhea Kurcewicz, Headteacher of Pye Bank Primary School, said: “It’s very important to us that children and families have safe routes to walk on their journey to school; we’re pleased to see investment in local streets.”
The council is encouraging Burngreave residents to share their views and help guide the planning process, as so far only ‘a dozen’ people have attended the first drop-in session and only ‘30 to 40 people answered online’.
Mrs Kurcewicz said: “We’re encouraging families, and everyone living locally, to take part in the consultation and share their views. It’s your chance to have a say on how our streets can be made safer for the next generation.”
