Free bus fare scheme for under 18s set to extend from Barnsley to Sheffield

Teenagers in Sheffield could be getting their bus rides for free, as the successful South Yorkshire’s People’s Network says Sheffield is next on their list for the scheme.

This MiCard scheme started in Barnsley in August last year and Sheffield is the next city to implement this scheme in their transport systems, with a wider goal roll out acorss all of South Yorkshire.

But many people are unhappy with the scheme, arguing that there are already school buses in place for young adults, and there are older people who may need the free fares more. there are people who believe that these free fares will bring about a positive change.

Leaders are hoping this will help remove the cost barrier for these younger people, they are including this alongside electric buses.

Buser user Keshell Martland said: “Why should they travel for free when young children damage the buses? Plenty of buses they use for schools and the state of them are diabolical.

“Pretty unfair for those who are also over 18, not sure why people are asking about over 60s either when they get bus passes. It’s the 20 to 45 year olds that miss out.”

And on facebook a resident from Chapeltown said: “The free kids travel is in addition to bringing buses back under public control.”

Sheffield councillor, Ben Miskell, explained on facebook that the public transport is broken and their plans to fix it are starting with the bus fares.
