Radio marathon raises money for mental health charity

The University of Sheffield’s radio station raised over £800 for Sheffield Mind with their 24 hour radio marathon.

The Forge Radio broadcast began at 5pm on Friday 6 March, and each two hour slot had a different student host, up until 5pm the next day.

Forge Radio makes up part of Forge Media, the University of Sheffield’s student media organisation. The station gives students the opportunity to gain experience in radio presenting, production, journalism and broadcasting.

Amelia Marriott, Forge Radio Station Manager and third-year student, said: “Forge Radio is delighted to have raised £1,200 for Sheffield Mind through our 24-hour broadcast marathon and 5k sponsored run.

“Nobody should face a mental health problem alone, and we believe in helping support Sheffield Mind to fight for support that is fair, safe, and empowering for everyone. We want to extend a massive thank you to Angus Hogarth for leading this initiative, the Forge Radio committee, our dedicated hosts, and every single person who donated to the cause.”

Throughout the academic year, students host regular shows covering music, culture, news and student life. With events like the 24 hour marathon, members are given the opportunity to raise awareness for causes that matter to the student community.

Sheffield Mind was founded in 1978, with over 45 years of experience in providing mental health services to people in the city.

As a comment on Forge Radio’s Instagram post, they said: “what a fabulous achievement! Massive thanks to all involved and all that generously donated to the campaign and special thanks to Angus, who came up with and delivered the concept – with a little support from his friends and colleagues – and managed to stay chipper and upbeat despite the lack of sleep.

“It’s been a pleasure working with you all and we can’t thank you enough for your support!”
