North vs South Rugby Charity Match; the debate to be settled

University of Sheffield rugby teams are joining forces to raise money for charity in a North vs South showdown.

Students are being divided into teams depending on which part of the country they are from and will be raising money for LooseHeadz and the OddBalls Foundation.

The teams that are taking part include Sheffield Medics Rugby Union Football Club (SMRUFC), Sheffield University Rugby Football Club (SURFC) and Sheffield University Women’s Rugby Football Club (SUWRFC).

The event includes both a male and female fixture, the women’s including a 10 a side, and the men’s being a traditional 15 a side.

LooseHeadz, founded in 2017, has the mission statement to “place a mental health lead at every rugby club in the world,” and provides free resources to help players tackle mental health challenges.

The OddBalls Foundation, founded in 2015, says it is “proud to be the UK’s leading charity raising awareness of Testicular Cancer – the most common cancer affecting men aged 15-49 in the UK.” It raises funds through selling vibrant clothing and collecting donations.

Ziva Myles, 18, a journalism student at the university, is playing number three for the North side in the Women’s fixture and represents SUWRFC.

She said: “I am really excited to play in the charity match as I think it’ll be great fun playing against my friends and teammates.

“Both charities mean a lot to me and my family so I’m looking forward to raising money for two very good causes.”

Tristan Andrew Jack Hall, 18, playing number three for the South side in the Men’s fixture, representing SURFC, said he was “ecstatic to be raising money for both charities as they are such incredible causes”.

“Men’s mental health especially within rugby can be overlooked so raising money for LooseHeadz is very fulfilling.”

The charity match is being hosted by the University of Sheffield Medics Rugby team and is set to take place on 23 May at the Sheffield Tigers ground in Hathersage Road, Dore S17 3AB.

Each ticket is £4 and proceeds go to both LooseHeadz and the OddBall Foundation. They can be bought online at https://pay.collctiv.com/tickets-nvs-6426?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio .
