{"id":152,"date":"2024-03-13T14:21:36","date_gmt":"2024-03-13T14:21:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=152"},"modified":"2024-03-13T16:39:31","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T16:39:31","slug":"sheffield-city-council-approves-controversial-maximum-tax-increase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/03\/13\/sheffield-city-council-approves-controversial-maximum-tax-increase\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield City Council approves controversial maximum tax increase"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheffield residents are set to face an increase in their council tax following councillors approval of the 2024\/25 financial budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chair of the Finance Committee Zahira Naz said: \u201cEvery year we have had to deliver more with less, which simply cannot continue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The budget was passed in a meeting last Wednesday, and includes the controversial approval of a Band D equivalent Council Tax of \u00a31,932,56 for City Council services, the maximum increase possible at 4.99%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coun Zahira Naz said: \u201cWe do not take the decision to increase council tax lightly, but to maintain our current levels of services in the city, we were left with no choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe soaring costs and continuous challenges to make ends meet have resulted in a budget which includes decisions we did not want to make, but have reluctantly put forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also agreed in the meeting on Wednesday was the Council Plan, formally proposed by Council leader Tom Hunt and seconded by Deputy Leader Angela Argenzio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The five ambitions outlined in the plan for Sheffield are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A place where all children belong and all young people can build a successful future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Great neighbourhoods that people are happy to call home.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People live in caring, engaged communities that value diversity and support wellbeing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A creative and prosperous city full of culture, learning and innovation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A City on the move &#8211; growing, connected and sustainable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">View the plan online at <a href=\"https:\/\/council-plan.sheffield.gov.uk\/\"><strong>https:\/\/council-plan.sheffield.gov.uk\/<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A net <a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.sheffield.gov.uk\/documents\/s66041\/Item%209%20Part%20A%20Appendix%20Budget%20Book%202024-25%2013.02.pdf\">Revenue Budget<\/a> amounting to \u00a3543,815m and the contents of a new Capital Strategy were also approved, outlining the council\u2019s priorities for next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Included in the programme was its continued spending on housing, set at \u00a3104.8m for 2024\/25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Council Leader Tom Hunt insisted that a \u2018decade of systematic under-investment\u2019 has put the council in a difficult position with its spending powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coun Hunt said: \u201cOver the last 14 years our council has lost in real terms nearly half of its funding from central government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery pound of public money that we administer, must be spent wisely.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sheffield residents are set to face an increase in their council tax following councillors approval of the 2024\/25 financial budget.
