{"id":49157,"date":"2024-02-27T16:26:08","date_gmt":"2024-02-27T16:26:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sheflive.co.uk\/?p=49157"},"modified":"2024-02-27T16:26:08","modified_gmt":"2024-02-27T16:26:08","slug":"council-tax-increase-applies-pressure-to-cost-of-living-in-sheffield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/02\/27\/council-tax-increase-applies-pressure-to-cost-of-living-in-sheffield\/","title":{"rendered":"Council tax increase applies pressure to cost of living in Sheffield"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sheflive.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2024\/02\/20240226_140103-1024x506.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49223\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An increase in council tax by 4.99% has been given the go-ahead by Sheffield City Council, \u201cwhich will push people into hardship\u201d according to Woodhouse and District Community Hub\u2019s Co-Ordinator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This could lead to Sheffield residents paying anywhere between \u00a371.90-\u00a3215.70 on top of their annual council tax bill depending on what council band they are in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This will put extra pressure on some South-East Sheffield residences such as Arbourthorne which has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.co.uk\/news\/the-18-poorest-areas-of-sheffield-based-on-average-household-income-4471865?page=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4<sup>th<\/sup> lowest income in Sheffield<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liz Turton, Woodhouse and District Community Hub\u2019s Co-Ordinator said: \u201ca rise in any kind of cost especially at this time when mortgage rates are increasing, bills and heating are increasing, to have another cost on top will push people into hardship.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When speaking about the extra pressure this puts on residents, Lydia Kent, the Cost of Living and Gambling Awareness Co-Ordinator from Sheffield Mind said: \u201cI think the main feelings would be feelings of stress&nbsp;which can lead to anxiety and isolation\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also said: \u201cIt\u2019s good they can speak to us but it\u2019s hard to get information, it\u2019s a vicious cycle of people not knowing where to get support\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Council have made this decision to try and balance their budget, with this increase to bring in an additional \u00a316 million.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the impact this&nbsp;will have on residents,&nbsp;Phillip Gregory, Director of Finance and Commercial Services said:&nbsp;\u201cwe expect people to be able to live on their budget.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the claims made by Mr Gregory, Mrs Turton said: \u201cI\u2019d like to think that they have to do it because they have to balance their books, but they have to understand the rising costs on the community\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision was announced at the Strategy and Resources Policy Committee.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An increase in council tax by 4.99% has been given the go-ahead by Sheffield City Council, \u201cwhich will push people into hardship\u201d according to Woodhouse and District Community Hub\u2019s Co-Ordinator.&nbsp;
