{"id":50696,"date":"2024-04-16T14:49:06","date_gmt":"2024-04-16T14:49:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=50696"},"modified":"2024-04-23T15:16:11","modified_gmt":"2024-04-23T15:16:11","slug":"sheffield-supertram-back-under-public-control-for-first-time-in-27-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/16\/sheffield-supertram-back-under-public-control-for-first-time-in-27-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Supertram under public control for first time in 27 years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The South Yorkshire Supertram is now under public control for the first time since 1997 after the contract with Stagecoach comes to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>South Yorkshire Mayor, Oliver Coppard said: \u201cToday is a historic day for South Yorkshire; it\u2019s one small step for tram, but it\u2019s the first step in our journey back to a public transport system that puts people first, connecting our communities and helping us to build a bigger and better economy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk\/\">The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA)<\/a> announced they have \u2018new and ambitious\u2019 plans to improve the tram system, whilst making them \u2018cleaner, greener and safer\u2019 remains a priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They say big changes will not be immediate, but small steps will be made to welcome the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes a 10% discount on some fares for the first 100 days of operation and 28-day adult and child tickets purchased onboard or through the new app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tram network is an integral part of the city, covering 21 miles with a tram-train extension connecting people to Rotherham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Darren Lowitt, 34, works in the city centre and said: \u201cI\u2019m happy to hear news of a takeover, as transport has not been reliable in and out of the city for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to transform Sheffield into a \u2018fully integrated public transport system\u2019 creating easier access all around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver Coppard said: \u201cWe\u2019re inheriting a Supertram that simply hasn\u2019t had the investment it has needed for far too long. So today we start to turn that around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m determined to give people more freedom and choice about how they travel and move across the whole of South Yorkshire. Today is a big step on that journey.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new tram stop at Magna in Rotherham and further transport to Derbyshire regions remains a possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority said: \u201cOne in three people in South Yorkshire do not have access to a car, and with a target to achieve carbon net zero before 2040 and clean up the air quality, the intent is to get more people to use public transport and make it a more positive experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read the full list of steps announced by SYMCA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southyorkshire-ca.gov.uk\/news\/article\/842e0100-72fd-4a04-81b4-642ff1474092\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The South Yorkshire Supertram is now under public control for the first time since 1997 after the contract with Stagecoach comes to an end.
