{"id":51687,"date":"2024-04-30T14:32:55","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T14:32:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=51687"},"modified":"2024-04-30T14:32:56","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T14:32:56","slug":"large-city-bike-ride-campaigns-for-safer-cycle-routes-in-sheffield","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/04\/30\/large-city-bike-ride-campaigns-for-safer-cycle-routes-in-sheffield\/","title":{"rendered":"Large city bike ride campaigns for safer cycle routes in Sheffield"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheffield bikers took part in the Big Ride event this weekend to call for \u2018safe routes to town, safe routes to schools, safe high streets for all\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organisation,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cyclesheffield.org.uk\/\"> Cycle Sheffield<\/a> wants a comprehensive and high-quality cycle network in the city so that all ages can safely enjoy cycling. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental activist for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldenvironmental.net\/\"> Sheffield Environmental<\/a>, Dave Dickinson, said: \u201cIn nine years of coming to these rides I\u2019ve noticed a lot of changes for the better but they\u2019re only limited, it could be a hell of a lot better. There\u2019s so much more we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organiser and rider, Roy Clutterbuck, said: \u201cI\u2019ve got a younger son, he\u2019s one and here on the ride today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn eight years, when he\u2019s by himself more, I hope that the city has got some more infrastructure in place, more bike lanes down the road, and that cycling is a more natural choice for him to get around the city.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI love cycling, I love being active. I much prefer it to being sat in my car.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added, \u201cWe need to do what we can to encourage other people and show them it is possible. So it\u2019s really nice to turn out a moment of solidarity to see all the other cyclists that are in Sheffield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0442-1024x572.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51698\" style=\"width:646px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0442-1024x572.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0442-980x548.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0442-480x268.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Riders cycling through the city<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The riders departed from Devonshire Green at 11am on Saturday 27th April and took part in a slow loop around the city whilst parading flags, music and cheering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rider and marshal, Matilda Ashford, said: \u201cThere\u2019s a general community atmosphere, it\u2019s great to see loads of people out on their bikes together enjoying the cycling infrastructure that we have in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s so important that when we have safe cycle routes, we enable more people to cycle, women and children especially. So it\u2019s good that there are those options for people to have a low-carbon way to get around safely and not just sit in cars.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Big Ride is an annual event which is accessible and family-friendly so that anyone in Sheffield can join in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"574\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0443-1024x574.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51699\" style=\"width:648px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0443-1024x574.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0443-980x549.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_0443-480x269.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dave Dickinson promoting Sheffield Environmental on the bike ride<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Dickinson, addressing the public, said: \u201cOne, get a bike. Two, vote for people that guarantee that these changes take place. Three, join a group like Cycle Sheffield or any one of these local groups that are working to make Sheffield a cleaner, green place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Clutterbuck, said: \u201cThere\u2019s a lot in the media about the wars between cyclists and drivers but we\u2019re all just humans living in Sheffield. I\u2019m sure we all want to make the city a bit greener, we all want to make the air easier to breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI do drive as well, so there are a lot of people that cycle and drive. It doesn\u2019t all have to be a conflict.
