{"id":52569,"date":"2024-05-13T08:58:30","date_gmt":"2024-05-13T08:58:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=52569"},"modified":"2024-05-13T08:58:31","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T08:58:31","slug":"gender-pay-gap-halved-in-a-year-says-fire-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2024\/05\/13\/gender-pay-gap-halved-in-a-year-says-fire-service\/","title":{"rendered":"Gender pay gap halved in a year says fire service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Yorkshire\u2019s fire service has seen the pay gap between men and women cut significantly, but fire chiefs say stereotypes are stopping women entering the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organisation&#8217;s Gender Pay Gap Report for 2023, showed that women within South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (SYFR) make 76p less an hour (4.59%) than men, in comparison to 2022\u2019s figures of \u00a31.69 less (10.18%).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sue Kelsey, Director of People and Culture, said: \u201cWe are pleased with the progress we are making as a service to address the gender pay gap and particularly in breaking down the traditional views of the fire fighter role.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report, discussed in a meeting of the South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority on 15 April, emphasised the \u201cpositive\u201d that the organisation is \u201cconsistently\u201d below England\u2019s gender pay gap national average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the<a href=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/sn07068\/#:~:text=How%20big%20is%20the%20gender,(figures%20exclude%20overtime%20pay).\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/commonslibrary.parliament.uk\/research-briefings\/sn07068\/#:~:text=How%20big%20is%20the%20gender,(figures%20exclude%20overtime%20pay).\"> Office of National Statistics,<\/a> the national mean gender pay gap for 2023 was 7.7%, an increase from 2022\u2019s figures of 7.6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"861\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_7789-1024x861.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52649\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_7789-980x824.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_7789-480x404.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The report also discussed the difference between bonus amounts between its male and female employees<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SYFR report also revealed reasons for its pay gap despite its decrease, including women being underrepresented in operational, management and senior positions, and occupational segregation remaining a \u201cfeature of the fire and rescue labour market\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite its progress in equal pay, \u201cdeeply embedded\u201d stereotypes of the industry are still limiting women from applying and excelling within the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms Kelsey said: \u201cWe know we still have work to do to change societal views and there is a great deal of work going on, by all staff across the service to engage with our communities across South Yorkshire to develop awareness of all the different career opportunities available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur women&#8217;s group in service play a key role in the engagement work and in helping shape our policies and practices to make the service an inclusive workplace for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SYFR women&#8217;s group conducts events and highlights issues raised by women in their efforts to diversify and understand within the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the 2022 report, it has employed multiple women into operational roles, which are the most under-represented positions held by women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The organisation analyses the proportion of men and women applying and recruited for roles and promotions to increase workforce diversity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To read more on SYFR&#8217;s inclusivity efforts, see its website<a href=\"https:\/\/www.syfire.gov.uk\/equality__diversity\/\"> here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Yorkshire\u2019s fire service has seen the pay gap between men and women cut significantly, but fire chiefs say stereotypes are stopping women entering the industry.
