{"id":52753,"date":"2025-03-03T17:43:06","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T17:43:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=52753"},"modified":"2025-03-03T17:43:07","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T17:43:07","slug":"rise-in-sheffield-fly-tipping-blamed-on-societys-social-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/03\/rise-in-sheffield-fly-tipping-blamed-on-societys-social-problems\/","title":{"rendered":"Rise in Sheffield fly-tipping blamed on society&#8217;s &#8216;social problems&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An increase in social problems has led to a surge in the amount of fly-tipping in local neighbourhoods and fewer volunteers willing to take action, according to a community litter-picker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volunteers believe the situation has progressed steadily since Covid-19 as people&#8217;s social situations have worsened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jenny Van Tinteren, 71, a volunteer for Action for Stannington, said: \u201cOur difficulties are recruiting more volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have also noticed that there&#8217;s an increasing problem with fly tipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI really think it&#8217;s all wound up with social problems, and until you start improving some of those I don&#8217;t think the situation will improve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Action for Stannington carries out regular litter picks in Stannington Park and cuts back hedges and overgrown paths to make the area safer for both the community and the wildlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decrease in the number of volunteers has led to the group having to reduce the amount of services it can offer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms Van Tinteren said that they cannot do all the things they would like to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said they could no longer offer to help people who cannot afford a gardener as the amount of volunteers has &#8220;fallen off massively&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And she explained that they have noticed that there is an increasing problem surrounding litter, as \u201cpeople&#8217;s ability to get rid of waste is quite depleted now\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms Van Tinteren added: \u201cIt&#8217;s so awful and depressing and its impact on wildlife is so bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe do need to care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bradfield Parish Council and local companies have been supporting the work of Action for Stannington for many years, providing an annual grant in exchange for partnership work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These grants along with money raised by volunteers has allowed Action for Stannington to complete projects to benefit their community, such as replacing broken fences and buying extra litter bins.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An increase in social problems has led to a surge in the amount of fly-tipping in local neighbourhoods and fewer volunteers willing to take action, according to a community litter-picker.
