{"id":52910,"date":"2025-03-05T17:25:34","date_gmt":"2025-03-05T17:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=52910"},"modified":"2025-03-05T17:25:35","modified_gmt":"2025-03-05T17:25:35","slug":"u10s-girls-football-team-smashes-fundraising-target-with-sponsored-hike-around-mam-tor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/05\/u10s-girls-football-team-smashes-fundraising-target-with-sponsored-hike-around-mam-tor\/","title":{"rendered":"U10\u2019s girls football team smashes fundraising target with sponsored hike around Mam Tor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Ridgeway Lionesses under-10\u2019s football team raised a total of \u00a31685 for <a href=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/tag\/cancer-research-uk\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"657\">Cancer Research UK<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/tag\/alzheimers-society\/\" data-type=\"post_tag\" data-id=\"658\">Alzheimer&#8217;s Society<\/a> after completing a 10 mile hike starting in Castleton to Mam Tor in Derbyshire on Saturday 2nd March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ridgeway Lionesses football club was founded by Paul Benison and his daughter Zara Benison three years ago after she wanted to continue playing football in a Girls-only team after playing in boys teams growing up.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting with just one team from Ridgeway primary school, the club has now grown to 4 teams and has been playing in league for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team decided to raise money for Alzheimer&#8217;s society and Cancer Research UK as a few members of the team have been directly impacted by these diseases, including Paul Benison whose father has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and Alzheimers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Club secretary and Team manager of the Under 10\u2019s Paul Benison, said: \u201cThe sun was shining, couldn\u2019t have hoped for a better day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7569-1-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52933\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7569-1-980x735.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7569-1-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul said that these causes are \u201creally close to the team&#8217;s hearts\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hike was completed in five hours by 11 players and their families from the U-10\u2019s lionesses team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lisa Millet, Cancer Research UK fundraising spokesperson for Sheffield, said: \u201cDedicated fundraisers like the Lionesses provide limitless inspiration for our scientists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Half of the money raised will be shared between the two charities and the other 50% will be used to enable the Ridgeway lionesses club to continue growing and providing a community for young female footballers to thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This fundraiser will help cancer research UK to continue their work, striving to find new and better ways to fight cancer and allow Alzheimer&#8217;s society to provide the support needed, keeping people with dementia connected to their lives and loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lisa said: \u201cNearly one in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime. But, all of us can support the research that will beat it.
