{"id":53163,"date":"2025-03-06T16:32:56","date_gmt":"2025-03-06T16:32:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=53163"},"modified":"2025-03-06T16:32:58","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T16:32:58","slug":"video-sheffield-jazz-legends-mourn-the-loss-of-the-dorothy-pax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/06\/video-sheffield-jazz-legends-mourn-the-loss-of-the-dorothy-pax\/","title":{"rendered":"VIDEO: Sheffield jazz legends mourn the loss of The Dorothy Pax"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Musicians have expressed heartbreak at the shock closure of a popular Sheffield independent venue.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday (March 5) The Dorothy Pax, in Victoria Quays, announced its immediate closure via social media to thousands of followers, after eight years in the industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the last two and a half years, popular jazz manouche band Jazz Hot Six have been performing at the venue every month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guitarist Bryan Day, of Jazz Hot Six, said: \u201cTheir closure is a massive loss to the culture of Sheffield. Without places like it, the world is a very dull place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jazz Hot Six played at The Dorothy Pax the day before the closure was announced, describing it as \u2018heartbreaking\u2019 to know that it would be the last gig that they would perform there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Music Venue Trust said: \u201cDorothy Pax is going to be bowing out at a position of never having been stronger\u2026 a story becoming tragically common in our sector.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dorothy Pax\u2019s recent success has only made their abrupt closure more shocking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Day said: \u201cOur nights had become so popular that steps had to be taken in order to keep the numbers attending down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt became one of the best nights out in Sheffield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The band is determined to continue playing in Sheffield as soon as they have found a new venue to host them, and hope to retain their slot on the first Tuesday of every month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jazz Hot Six\u2019s struggle to find another suitable venue reflects the hardships that grassroots music venues are currently facing countrywide, and the reason for The Dorothy Pax\u2019s closure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arkodoy Dutta, 20, a student and regular at The Dorothy Pax, said: \u201cI\u2019ve seen some of the best live music Sheffield has to offer at Dorothy Pax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely the end of an era and makes me anxious about what\u2019s to come for other music venues in Sheffield.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dorothy Pax has heavily emphasised the importance of supporting local talent and independent venues, stating that we must \u2018use them, or lose them\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Day said: \u201cWe\u2019d like to personally thank Richard and everyone at The DP for their contribution to the Sheffield music and arts scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jazz Hot Six performing their last concert at The Dorothy Pax\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RClZIZgnhr4?feature=oembed\"  allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Musicians have expressed heartbreak at the shock closure of a popular Sheffield independent venue.
