{"id":53306,"date":"2025-03-07T14:10:58","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T14:10:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=53306"},"modified":"2025-03-07T14:10:59","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T14:10:59","slug":"sheffield-memorial-honours-81st-anniversary-of-ww2-mi-amigo-plane-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/07\/sheffield-memorial-honours-81st-anniversary-of-ww2-mi-amigo-plane-crash\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield memorial honours 81st anniversary of WW2 \u2018Mi Amigo\u2019 plane crash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">81 years after the World War Two \u2018Mi Amigo\u2019 plane crash, a memorial service was held to honour the ten American airmen who lost their lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The B-17 aircraft crashed in Endcliffe Park on 22 February 1944, after sustaining damage to its engines.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tony Foulds, 88, a witness of the crash in 1944, said: \u201cI\u2019ve looked after the memorial since I was 17. It\u2019s all about them. My life is all about them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Foulds remembered \u2018everything\u2019 when the plane \u2018broke in half and burst into flames\u2019, as the pilot reportedly crashed to avoid him and the other children in the park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He lived with \u2018guilt\u2019 and thought if it were not for him, the plane would have been able to land.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXde5NbVtdjXDhFn3Wx1nR8DhkjxdvACO6CVnGCTtCuiicjO2BPxE6kK7qjaa378QbQFGfJ8lZlNko0C5z74cDDs5d07pdClksxqACXqhhqDocse_M-jc4kTp_tcMrgPWa0CcTxmCA?key=oQBZNmkLID00ToY03X7WqDjo\" alt=\"Plane crash witness, Tony Foulds, 88, standing in front of the memorial, wearing an Air Force jacket and an American Flag bandana on his head.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The great-niece of Technical Sergeant George M. Williams, one of the men aboard the plane, travelled from Arkansas, USA, to attend the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service included a bugler playing The Last Post at 11 a.m., a two-minute silence, and Mr Foulds reading the Lord\u2019s Prayer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darlene Cunningham, 74, from Wakefield, who attended the memorial, said: \u201cI find it very touching. I give Tony Foulds all the credit in the world for doing something like this. I mean it\u2019s just amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First Lieutenant John Kriegshauser, the pilot, received a posthumous Distinguished Flying Cross for sacrificing himself and the crew.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Foulds, who was present when the RAF established the memorial, expressed his wish to have his ashes scattered there, as it is where he \u2018wants to be\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sophie Stanley, 19, Crookesmoor, said: \u201cI think the fact he experienced that is unbelievable.
