Tomorrow, the city will celebrate International Women’s Day in bring attention to the on-going battle for gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
International Women\u2019s Day has its roots from a protest by women garment workers in New York in 1857. It was proposed by Theresa Malkiel,who was an American Labour Activist, suffragist and educator<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1911, it was officially marked for the first time and was celebrated across many countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This event gave women the confidence and strength to demand the right to vote, stand up for being discriminated against in workplaces and hold public office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet women still struggle and face sexism in the leading world. Fewer than one third of the countries have elected women to lead their countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dianna o\u2019Neil, a resident, of Sheffield said: “International Women’s Day highlights all the inspiring women in our lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She also said that Margaret Thatcher, whether or not one agrees with her opinions, we have to give her the credit for being a very strong and resilient woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0In, there are various events happening in Sheffield. The Sheffield Women\u2019s Collective is holding a static event in honour of those women who have died at the hands of men. They will be lighting candles at the Sheffield Peace Gardens on the 8th of March at 7:30 pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sheffield Palestine scholarship fund, is hosting a \u2018Solidarity with Palestinian women\u2019, in the Broomhall Centre at 6:30 pm. They aim to raise funds for the children in Gaza and the west bank to continue with their education despite the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And the Cambridge Street Collective is hosting a \u2018self defence taster session\u2019 to teach the basics of self defence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
