{"id":53766,"date":"2025-03-13T10:55:55","date_gmt":"2025-03-13T10:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=53766"},"modified":"2025-03-13T10:55:56","modified_gmt":"2025-03-13T10:55:56","slug":"body-cameras-now-mandatory-for-tram-staff-following-rise-in-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/13\/body-cameras-now-mandatory-for-tram-staff-following-rise-in-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"Body cameras now mandatory for tram staff following rise in abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A recent spike in anti-social behaviour has caused Sheffield Supertram to make it mandatory for its conductors to wear body cameras, its operator has announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The policy has been introduced to serve as an \u201ceffective deterrent\u201d against the crime and disorder faced by Supertram staff members. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a trial two years ago, staff members reported feeling \u201csafer\u201d using the cameras.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Stewart, Supertram\u2019s head of customer service and operations, said: \u201cThe safety and wellbeing of our staff and passengers is our top priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe introduction of body cameras is a vital step to ensure a safer working environment for our frontline colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese cameras not only help deter anti-social behaviour but also provide crucial evidence when needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are proud of the positive impact they have already had and look forward to continuing our commitment to safety and security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram operators in Manchester and Nottingham reported positive results after their staff have been wearing body-worn cameras for a number of years, with Sheffield now looking to replicate this zero-tolerance stance on anti-social behaviour as part of their \u2018report all incidents\u2019 pledge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karl, a Supertram conductor, told Shef Live that despite having experienced issues with customers in the past, his camera has worked as a deterrent against such behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cThe cameras have been in use since August of \u201823, they\u2019ve just made it mandatory as a safety feature because they\u2019ve seen a fall in crime rates on public transport everywhere with body cameras so they\u2019ve copied it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s working, the cameras do work. You don\u2019t see many issues, it\u2019s only when you get really picky with someone. It\u2019s one of them where you\u2019ve just got to let it go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re fine for them, they\u2019re fine for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Karl\u2019s colleague, who chose not to be identified, added: \u201cIt\u2019s just come into play, being mandatory.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll help in the long run, definitely.
