A student hopes to fundraise \u00a3400 by running the Sheffield Half Marathon in honour of her grandad who suffered with testicular cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eliza Ridout, 18, an architecture student at the University of Sheffield, is taking part in the race on Sunday for Yorkshire Cancer Research (YCR) among others running for various charities at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: \u201cIn the last few years of his life he really was quite immobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It\u2019s like I’m running for him because he couldn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miss Ridout has a fundraising goal of \u00a3400 and so far has reached over \u00a3300.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her choice to fundraise for YCR was also influenced by the fact that Yorkshire is one of the hardest areas hit by cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than a fifth of cancers in Yorkshire are discovered following an emergency hospital admission – the highest proportion of anywhere in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miss Ridout explained how she had not undergone any formal training leading up to the half marathon but had completed a 13k run before and completes 5k runs every week as part of her hockey sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: \u201cIt\u2019s a really great way to go and meet new people and I think it\u2019s just a really cool thing to say, I’ve done a half marathon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miss Ridout has expressed her excitement for the half marathon and described it as a “great community experience” and is hopeful in making it to the finish line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said: \u201cSchool children wait outside and they hand little sweets and stuff and everyone is cheering you on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sheffield Half Marathon is an annual 13.1-mile running event with a history dating back to 1929 and is organised by Run for All.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The half marathon route starts at Arundel Gate in the city centre at 9.30am, goes up to Ringinglow and finishes back in the centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charities running at the half marathon include The Children\u2019s Hospital Charity, Paces, St Luke\u2019s Hospice, Sheffield Mutual Friendly Society and many others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
