{"id":54695,"date":"2025-03-21T11:12:03","date_gmt":"2025-03-21T11:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=54695"},"modified":"2025-03-21T11:12:06","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T11:12:06","slug":"dont-suffer-in-silence-hallam-netball-team-speaks-out-on-eating-disorders-through-charity-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/21\/dont-suffer-in-silence-hallam-netball-team-speaks-out-on-eating-disorders-through-charity-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Don&#8217;t suffer in silence&#8217; &#8211; Hallam netball team speaks out on eating disorders through charity tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Netballers are trying to break the taboo surrounding eating disorders and have taken to the court to raise funds for a charity giving support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield Hallam&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Netball Team brought attention to the work of South Yorkshire Eating Disorders Association (SYEDA) through a charity tournament played on 8 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Player and charity secretary Clare Gallogly, 21, said: &#8220;As a club, if we can talk freely about it between us girls it becomes less of a taboo topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Eating disorders are quite prevalent in females of our age at University.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A total of \u00a3102 was raised for SYEDA through the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tournament was played following National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (24 February to 2 March) with this year&#8217;s theme being The Time is Now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Player Megan Handley, 20, said: &#8220;It&#8217;s something that I\u2019ve struggled with personally. I think it&#8217;s so important that people feel comfortable enough to talk about it and don&#8217;t have to suffer in silence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many Hallam sports clubs, such as Men&#8217;s and Women&#8217;s basketball, American Football and the Men&#8217;s Rugby Union, joined the Women&#8217;s Netball Team at a university netball court to take part in the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-12-edited.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54706\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-12-edited.png 1170w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-12-edited-980x735.png 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/image-12-edited-480x360.png 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1170px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Players in the charity tournament<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>SYEDA provides support and education towards eating disorders in the Sheffield region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The independent charity, formed in 1996, said: &#8220;Men, women, young and old, all access our services. You don\u2019t have to look a particular way to get support from us.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Gallogly said: &#8220;It was so rewarding seeing the charity that we chose appreciated by other people and it really did get people talking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hallam&#8217;s Women&#8217;s Netball raised awareness for Breast Cancer in October and &#8216;Movember&#8217; in November, as well as participating in charity walks, pub quizzes and making Christmas boxes for the homeless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team are currently fundraising for a mental health charity called <a href=\"https:\/\/sheffieldflourish.co.uk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/sheffieldflourish.co.uk\/\">Sheffield Flourish<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Netballers are trying to break the taboo surrounding eating disorders and have taken to the court to raise funds for a charity giving support.
