{"id":54999,"date":"2025-03-24T17:13:15","date_gmt":"2025-03-24T17:13:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=54999"},"modified":"2025-03-24T17:13:16","modified_gmt":"2025-03-24T17:13:16","slug":"ducks-return-to-race-sheffields-river-porter-next-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/03\/24\/ducks-return-to-race-sheffields-river-porter-next-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Ducks return to race Sheffield\u2019s River Porter next month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Endcliffe Park\u2019s \u201cspectacular\u201d duck race will return for another year this Easter Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 21 April, Friends of the Porter Valley will be releasing 2,500 plastic ducks into the River Porter to raise money for a p\u00e9tanque court for Bingham Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The p\u00e9tanque court will replace an unused bowling green, revitalising the area and making it more accessible for people of all ages to play sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P\u00e9tanque is also known by some people as boules. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Glynis Jones, 75, a retired lecturer at the University of Sheffield and committee member of the Friends of the Porter Valley said the event is now far more about the local community coming together rather than the fundraising activity it started out as.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThe highlight of the event, as most people see it, is the start, because the launch is quite spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just like the community atmosphere. I love the atmosphere, especially if it\u2019s a nice day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s people everywhere and they&#8217;re enjoying themselves. There\u2019s children, their families, there are all kinds of people and I just think that\u2019s so exciting to be a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7075-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55013\" style=\"width:389px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7075-980x735.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/IMG_7075-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor Jones said that this year\u2019s event has had more interest than expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that this year around 30 stalls will be set up in Endcliffe Park at the time of the race with various activities and products, including a fairground and crafts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event first began after Friends of the Porter Valley reused Tapton School\u2019s race ducks in Endcliffe Park to help in restoring Shepherd Wheel, which has now been running for over 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, developments have been introduced to improve the duck race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A drop tower and a better finish line &#8211; made with a net and a tube to catch the first 40 winning ducks &#8211; were built for the event and an increasing number of ducks being sold online, with some racing ducks having up to four sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In past races more than 50 people signed up to volunteer to help and Professor Glynis said the event couldn\u2019t be done with just &#8220;one or two people\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Friends of the Porter Valley and Bingham Park Community Group are encouraging people to volunteer at the duck race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Endcliffe Park\u2019s \u201cspectacular\u201d duck race will return for another year this Easter Monday.&nbsp; On 21 April, Friends of the Porter Valley will be releasing 2,500 plastic ducks into the River Porter to raise money for a p\u00e9tanque court for Bingham Park.
