{"id":56129,"date":"2025-05-02T13:45:40","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T13:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=56129"},"modified":"2025-05-02T13:54:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T13:54:36","slug":"sheffield-councils-green-belt-plans-cause-quarrel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/02\/sheffield-councils-green-belt-plans-cause-quarrel\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Council&#8217;s green belt plans cause quarrel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A determined community have rallied together to fight plans to build over 3,500 new homes on six green belt sites in the north of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council has been working with planning inspectors to deliver the \u2018Sheffield Local Plan\u2019 , a 14-year plan from the central government for housing development.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This aims to combat Sheffield\u2019s housing crisis, which holds 25,000 people on its council house waiting list, a 23-year wait under current circumstances. There are a further 12,000 actively looking for homes, and just over 2,000 in temporary accommodation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was expected for only brownfield land to be built on, however there was a lack of space for the remaining 3,539. These are to be built on 3.6% of Sheffield\u2019s green belt land, decided after a 8-5 vote from the Strategy and Resources Committee on Wednesday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This has been met with strong opposition from Grenoside residents, and councillors with many of them worried about the impact this will have on infrastructure, traffic, services, and the local environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a meeting of Grenoside Parish Council on Tuesday at Grenoside Reading Room, one resident said : \u201cFor me, it&#8217;s not even about the traffic, it makes me really sad when I see them cutting trees down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just seems so unsustainable as a project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Alan Hooper said: \u201cI\u2019ve lived in Grenoside for 55 years, It\u2019s a wonderful place to live.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A change.org petition \u2018Prevent Development on Grenoside\u2019s Green Belt\u2019 , organised by resident Vickie Fletcher, has reached over 1,500 signatures in seven days and has been recognised by local councillors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Mike Levery said: \u201cThe problem is uneven distribution. It\u2019s not fair, its not balanced, and the rest of the city is not picking up the slack.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>37% of the housing quotas, and six out of fourteen green belt sites, have been decided for the north.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cWe will not accept a plan with this level of development.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A final decision will be made at full council on 14th May, and if agreed, a subsequent six-week public consultation process will begin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun Levery made a strong plea for residents to get involved: \u201cYour views and your voices need to be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a problem we are facing as a city and we are trying to find a solution to it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A determined community have rallied together to fight plans to build over 3,500 new homes on six green belt sites in the north of the city.
