Strikes at the University of Sheffield are set to go ahead over the next fortnight over a dispute the threat of compulsory redundancies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Staff members who are part of UCU say they will continue to protest against the \u2018drastic restructuring plans that put up to a 1,000 jobs at risk’ for nine days beginning next Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meredith Warren, Senior Lecturer in English said: \u201cIt\u2019s clear we care more about our students and colleagues than the University management do\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This comes after 74% of UCU members who voted, backed the strike action after the Vice Chancellor announced plans to cut staffing costs by \u00a323 million over the next two years in November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The proposals will affect 796 staff and could lead to at least 50 compulsory redundancies during this academic year alone according to UCU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Martha Heatherington, 2nd year Philosophy student said: \u201cI think what’s most disappointing is that the university management has basically said that the strikes are not going to do anything. They would rather have all of the staff and all of the students suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Due to not all staff being members of UCU or deciding to take part, not all students will be affected by the strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The University has said that teaching and assessments are expected to take place as normal unless otherwise notified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
