{"id":56259,"date":"2025-05-07T15:39:47","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T15:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=56259"},"modified":"2025-05-11T14:12:27","modified_gmt":"2025-05-11T14:12:27","slug":"sheffield-womens-homelessness-service-secures-1-25m-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/07\/sheffield-womens-homelessness-service-secures-1-25m-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield women&#8217;s homelessness service secures \u00a31.25m funding"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A supported accommodation scheme for homeless women in Sheffield has secured \u00a31.25 million in continued funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jo Meagher, Director of the Young Women\u2019s Housing Project\u2014a Sheffield-based charity supporting women through safe, supported accommodation said: \u201cSafe, supported accommodation is essential for women facing homelessness, especially those affected by domestic abuse, trauma, or other complex challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially set to end this year, the scheme will now continue after councillors voted on Thursday, 24 April, to extend the contract for another five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking after the meeting Councillor Douglas Johnson, Chair of the Housing Policy Committee, welcomed the decision and said: \u201cLike anyone else who becomes homeless, the council has a legal duty to assess their needs and help with rehousing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_3893-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_3893-980x735.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_3893-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">*Sheffield City Centre &#8211; not the site chosen for the accommodation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jo Meagher said: \u201cSheffield City Council currently funds a number of specialist accommodation services for women. To be truly effective, these services must be trauma-informed and delivered within a psychologically informed environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The service will now receive \u00a3250,000 per year for five years to ensure ongoing support for some of the city\u2019s most vulnerable residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supported service plays a key role in helping women, including those with young children, transition to independent living and rebuild their lives and forms part of sheffield\u2019s wider plan to end homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"485\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4170-1024x485.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-56764\" style=\"width:371px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4170-1024x485.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4170-980x464.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/IMG_4170-480x227.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jo Meagher added: \u201cWithout access to such support, many women face unsafe living conditions or rough sleeping, significantly increasing their risk of exploitation, harm, and chronic homelessness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Council officers had warned that without the renewed funding, it would become increasingly difficult to find safe placements for women at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This increases pressure on already strained social care and domestic abuse services<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Johnson added: \u201cAlthough homeless women can be accommodated in other emergency housing, it doesn&#8217;t provide the additional support and a secure environment where they can rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the meeting of Sheffield City Council&#8217;s Housing Policy Committee on April 24, Head of City Wide Housing Services, Suzanne Allen said: \u201c I want to emphasise how important this legislation is for vulnerable people living in accommodation which isn\u2019t of sufficient quality or providing support that is required at a cost that is far to high for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents needing help can contact Housing Solutions on <strong>0114 273 6306<\/strong> or the Council Housing Service on <strong>0114 293 0000<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A supported accommodation scheme for homeless women in Sheffield has secured \u00a31.25 million in continued funding.
