{"id":57018,"date":"2025-05-15T13:40:12","date_gmt":"2025-05-15T13:40:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=57018"},"modified":"2025-05-15T13:40:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T13:40:13","slug":"send-students-to-become-more-adulthood-ready-following-skills-for-life-programme-approval","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2025\/05\/15\/send-students-to-become-more-adulthood-ready-following-skills-for-life-programme-approval\/","title":{"rendered":"SEND students to become more \u2018adulthood ready\u2019 following Skills for Life programme approval"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A programme that advocates for teenager and young adult independence for individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) has been approved by the Sheffield City Council.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head of Service, Resource and Business Planning Manager, Mark Sheikh, mapped out the contents of the revised proposal, highlighting the <strong>Expansion of the Independent Travel Training (ITT) Scheme.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head of Service Manager, Mark Sheikh said: \u201cWe want to further develop and expand our already existing <strong>Freedom to Travel &#8211; Skills for Life programme <\/strong>to make sure that enhanced independent travel training is available for post-16 students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Sheikh shared his ambition to eventually extend the scheme &#8211;\u00a0 making it accessible for under-16 students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Independent travel training offers <strong>SEND<\/strong> students with personalised training and support with home-to-school travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parent, Gaynor Stevenson shared her experience with independent travel training in the Education, Children and Families Policy Committee meeting on 7 May &#8211; sharing how it has been nothing but a \u2018win-win\u2019 scheme for her 20-year-old son Robert.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Stevenson said: \u201cIt\u2019s improved his confidence; it\u2019s given him a sense of self worth; it\u2019s enabled him.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s going to go to university in September, and because he is going to be taking himself there and back it will also allow him to access all of those things at university that we all take for granted such as the social scene, the clubs, everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun Toby Mallinson also shared his son\u2019s experience with using the ITT scheme and said: \u201cWe were offered travel training which was fantastic. The travel training didn\u2019t only just give him the confidence, it gave us the confidence as parents to allow him the freedom to travel on his own.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don&#8217;t know where we would be if we didn&#8217;t have that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Sheikh went on to highlight the benefits of enhancing the scheme &#8211; linking it to \u2018greater social inclusion\u2019 and \u2018increased personal development.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Stevenson said: \u201cIt\u2019s going to open his life up. It is going to give him those job opportunities, those further education opportunities that would&#8217;ve been difficult for him to access otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the end it&#8217;s a win-win situation.
