{"id":57629,"date":"2026-02-24T13:45:27","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T13:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=57629"},"modified":"2026-02-24T13:45:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T13:45:29","slug":"weston-park-cancer-charity-closes-in-on-1-85m-goal-following-steel-city-derby-support","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/02\/24\/weston-park-cancer-charity-closes-in-on-1-85m-goal-following-steel-city-derby-support\/","title":{"rendered":"Weston Park Cancer Charity closes in on \u00a31.85m goal following Steel City Derby support"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Weston Park Cancer Charity is closing in on its \u00a31.85 million fundraising goal following the Steel City Derby&#8217;s \u2018Bring a Pound\u2019 initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign saw the charity get closer to their fundraising target to buy an MRI simulator for their hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Players walked out at Brammall Lane surrounded by Weston Park Cancer Charity banners and fans were urged to donate a pound to support the campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CEO Emma Clarke said: \u201cThis ground-breaking technology will help our incredible specialists to see cancer with more clarity and treat it with more precision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weekend&#8217;s campaign was a part of the charity&#8217;s wider \u2018see it. treat it\u2019 appeal started in April last year as the charity&#8217;s \u2018year-long\u2019 initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The association with Sheffield United FC has been highlighted by Head of Operation at the club Dave McCarthy and Francesca Wilder &#8211; Wife of Blades manager Chris Wilder &#8211; who are Appeal Board members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCarthy said the benefits of having the simulator &#8211; which enables in depth scans of heads and necks-  at Weston Park \u2018cannot be underestimated\u2019 while Wilder labelled the technology \u2018truly transformative\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fundraiser has already seen backing from international Health company Westfield Health who have matched donations up to \u00a3500,000.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dave Capper, CEO at Westfield Health said: \u201cOur \u00a3500,000 matched giving pledge &#8211; the largest in our history &#8211; is about more than funding. It\u2019s about accelerating progress, saving lives, and backing bold local ambitions to make South Yorkshire healthier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January, the charity announced it had reached the \u00a31.4 million mark expressing their gratitude to everyone who has contributed so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kash Purohit, \u2018see it. treat it.\u2019 Appeal Board Chair said: \u201cThe scanner will allow oncologists to greatly enhance the accuracy of radiotherapy. Not only will this transform the treatment experience for patients, but it should improve outcomes across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new scanner should allow Doctors greater accuracy when targeting cancerous tissues reducing the long term impacts of cancer treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weston Park Cancer Charity was opened in 1970 and since then has been at the heart of Cancer research and treatment in Sheffield and nationwide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is possible to donate yourself via the charity\u2019s website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westonpark.org.uk\/\">https:\/\/www.westonpark.org.uk\/<\/a> .
