{"id":57632,"date":"2026-02-24T13:39:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-24T13:39:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=57632"},"modified":"2026-02-24T22:55:39","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T22:55:39","slug":"dragons-drums-and-dancers-meadowhall-marks-chinese-lunar-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/02\/24\/dragons-drums-and-dancers-meadowhall-marks-chinese-lunar-new-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Dragons, drums and dancers: Meadowhall marks Chinese Lunar New Year"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Meadowhall welcomed this year\u2019s Sheffield Chinese Lunar New Year Extravaganza with family activities and performances across a week of festivities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Sunday 15 to Friday 20 February, Meadowhall invited shoppers to take part in free drop-in workshops to mark Chinese Lunar New Year, including lantern making, calligraphy writing and mask painting events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrations at Meadowhall concluded with a headline performance from the internationally acclaimed, Word Champion Lion Dance performers, Foshan Lion Dance Troupe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lion dance is traditionally performed to bring good luck and prosperity for the coming year and to drive away bad spirits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the performers were also traditional dancers, drummers, and a Chinese vocal artist, who all took to the stage in the Lower Oasis as hundreds gathered to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesse Wyatt, 44, of Hillsborough, attended the event with her two children. She said: \u201cIt was fantastic for the kids to see such an exciting and vibrant display. Hopefully it\u2019ll encourage them to want to learn more about other cultures and traditions here in Sheffield.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presented by Cultural Inclusive CIC in association with Sheffield BID and Sheffield City Council, the Chinese New Year Gala has become a thriving celebration of tradition and culture in Sheffield since it&#8217;s first event in 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Festival founder and organiser Jerry Cheung described the event as a way to \u201ccelebrate our city\u2019s diversity and build lasting connections between communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Cheung said: \u201cIt is about bringing the whole city together and sharing culture.
