The Coast to Coast challenge is 192 miles long, almost as long as the spire is in feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reverend hopes to raise \u00a35,000 to add to the \u00a31 million the church urgently needs by this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reverend Rhodes said: \u201cI like the variety of working here\u2026 It\u2019s just a privilege to work with people at important times in their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church was built in 1879 but was almost completely destroyed by a fire in 1887, with only the tower and spire surviving. Since its opening it has been a staple of the Sheffield skyline, and a \u2018beacon of prayer and hope\u2019 for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: \u201cA lot of life events have happened here, lots of people got married here, been baptised, had their funerals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"918\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_2902-1024x918.jpeg\" alt=\"St Johns Church Ranmoor\" class=\"wp-image-57774\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.1154831741460005;width:683px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_2902-980x879.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_2902-480x431.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Coast to Coast path passes through scenic National Parks like the Yorkshire Dales and usually takes around 16 days to complete, though Reverend hopes to complete it in 13.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reverend Rhodes said: \u201cJust knowing that lots of people are sponsoring me, and supporting me, and praying for me will keep me going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u2018Save Our Spire\u2019 appeal was launched last year, and is a part of the church\u2019s wider long-term plan to transform the building. This includes goals like installing accessible toilets and underfloor heating, and making space for the Sunday school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St Johns collects fortnightly for the Burngreave Foodbank, hosts a Wednesday Lunch Club for its elderly parishioners, and has previously raised money for the local Weston Park Cancer Charity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those who want to help but can\u2019t donate, \u2018talking about it, telling other people about it&#8217; and just stopping in would&nbsp;support the cause, according to the Reverend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Reverend&#8217;s donation page is available on JustGiving, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/page\/matthew-rhodes-1?msockid=15ee64661b706050119f736d1a556196\">Matthew Rhodes is fundraising for St John&#8217;s Church, Ranmoor<\/a>.
