Sheffield\u2019s iconic Leadmill venue, which closed its doors last June, has set up a crowdfunding campaign to secure a permanent home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A goal of \u00a330,000 hopes to fund a new location that will prioritise accessibility with all new stage, light, and sound equipment. The company is asking for donations from five to 20 pounds to support their venture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On their website, Michael Cross, promoter at the Leadmill, wrote: \u201cThis isn\u2019t about starting over from scratch. It\u2019s about continuing something that matters to people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf The Leadmill has ever meant something to you \u2013 a first gig, a favourite night out, the first time you met your partner \u2013 we\u2019d love you to be part of what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The closure of The Leadmill has come at a time of nationwide suffering for grassroots venues and the past seven months have seen the company collaborate with many independent Sheffield venues, including Sidney & Matilda and the Hallamshire Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nearly 150 events, including club nights, live music and comedy, and cinema screenings, have been organised by The Leadmill. Mr Cross said: \u201cNone of this would\u2019ve been possible without the brilliant venues that have opened their doors to us and that support Sheffield\u2019s creative scene.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even in their closure, The Leadmill have platformed creative communities – from their very own stage at 2025\u2019s Tramlines Festival to the \u2018Sheffield Fringe Takeover\u2019 they hosted at the end of last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stevie Martin is one of many comedians whom The Leadmill \u2018presented\u2019 at local venue The Steamworks. She said: \u201cComedy and the arts [don\u2019t] exist without grassroots venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWithout venues for hosting up and coming comedians, you don\u2019t get\u2026 90% of the comedians who are on Taskmaster! Or any other comedy show on TV. We\u2019ve got to protect these places!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Leadmill\u2019s legacy is also upheld by its involvement in student nightlife, currently hosting its iconic \u2018Leadmill Fridays\u2019 in Sheffield Student Union\u2019s The Foundry. Students are excited at the prospect of a new venue – calling The Foundry\u2019s take on the event \u2018boring\u2019 and \u2018repetitive\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sofia Follano, 18, student at the University of Sheffield said: \u201cI can\u2019t wait. This is what I came to Sheffield for!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
