{"id":57953,"date":"2026-03-06T16:12:34","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T16:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=57953"},"modified":"2026-03-06T16:12:39","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T16:12:39","slug":"calls-for-curbs-on-loud-speakers-used-by-buskers-and-street-preachers-on-the-moor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/06\/calls-for-curbs-on-loud-speakers-used-by-buskers-and-street-preachers-on-the-moor\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls for curbs on &#8216;loud speakers&#8217; used by buskers and street preachers on The Moor"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A petition to the council has questioned the use of sound amplifiers for buskers and preachers in Sheffield city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buskers and preachers are a common sight on The Moor in Sheffield&#8217;s city centre, but a recent petition has asked for limits to be put on the volume of speakers being used. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition, titled: &#8216;Recognise Impact of Amplified Preaching and Music on The Moor, Sheffield&#8217; states that &#8216;there is no reason to use amplifiers at all for preaching &#8211; people can hear each other perfectly well using their voices, if they want to listen.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisers said that the aim of this petition is to gain recognition of the &#8216;disturbing and often earsplitting noise levels on The Moor&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trudie McCarthy, a 53 year old teacher from Grimsby said that it&#8217;s &#8216;too loud&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t make me want to stop and listen, it makes me want to move faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t actually want to get into a religious conversation when you&#8217;re out shopping and drinking your coffee.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition asks for further regulations to be put into place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said: &#8220;There is no place for loud amplifiers in public spaces. If they are against the by-laws of parks, why not our pedestrianised high street, where people want to sit, eat and chat outside in peace?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_5260-2-1024x652.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_5260-2-980x624.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_5260-2-480x306.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Mclean, who started the petition, wrote: &#8220;This year&#8217;s Christmas market brought huge crowds of shoppers to our city centre, with The Moor coming alive following the heart of the city investment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;With the market and rides gone, this space is once more being taken up by amplified preaching and busking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added: &#8220;There is no place for loud amplifiers in public spaces.
