{"id":58020,"date":"2026-03-02T16:50:49","date_gmt":"2026-03-02T16:50:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=58020"},"modified":"2026-03-02T16:50:53","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T16:50:53","slug":"famous-rivelin-goose-left-in-harsh-conditions-after-dog-attack-but-saved-by-loyal-supporter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/02\/famous-rivelin-goose-left-in-harsh-conditions-after-dog-attack-but-saved-by-loyal-supporter\/","title":{"rendered":"Famous Rivelin goose left in harsh conditions after dog attack &#8211; but saved by loyal supporter"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An adored goose which was attacked by a dog is recovering in Sheffield after being rescued by a Rivelin resident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fragile &#8211; the name given to the goose by Jo Meckin &#8211; has also been called Ms. Goose, Gus-Gus, Colonel Gander and Geoff by his fans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had lived in Rivelin for many years but was discovered by Jo after being attacked a dog last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When trying to feed \u2018Fragile\u2019, Jo found that he had been terribly injured with his beak bleeding badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She spoke on the phone with vets, who thought that his beak may have been caught by a fishhook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere were two fishermen and I asked them what happened and they said a dog got him an hour ago.\u201d said Jo. It was believed that he would need to be put down due to the extremes of his injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However after further examination, it was concluded that this was not the case, which allowed them to prescribe him antibiotics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With help, Jo and her friend Anya were able to get \u2018Fragile\u2019 to Linjoy Wildlife Sanctuary and Rescue, where he is currently being looked after and expected to have his beak drained this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopes are high for \u2018Fragile\u2019s\u2019 recuperation, however even if his condition improves, he will legally not be allowed to return to the pond, with his fellow ducks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll all be wondering where he is, cause I think he protected them all &#8211; about the ducks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the long term, Jo wishes to have him relocated to a private pond, \u201cIf it gets well enough it can come back here but it has to be private cause he\u2019s not native, if we can get him closer Debra might find him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Emden goose was a resident at Havelock Dam, in River Glen, for many years, and is thought to have previously been kept as a pet, only to be illegally dumped and left behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"661\" height=\"882\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58033\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7494388003054778;width:246px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-3.jpeg 661w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/image-3-480x640.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 661px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With clipped wings, he was unable to fly away but had been able to rest and find himself a new home in Rivelin surrounded by a community that treasures him dearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local celebrity gained a mass following, one of his frequent visitors being Jo and son Felix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair fell in love with the goose in 2020, taking regular visits to feed him and his friends oats.
