{"id":58329,"date":"2026-03-04T13:45:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T13:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=58329"},"modified":"2026-03-04T13:45:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T13:45:09","slug":"sharrow-in-the-spotlight-as-its-much-loved-latern-festival-begins-to-shine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/04\/sharrow-in-the-spotlight-as-its-much-loved-latern-festival-begins-to-shine\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharrow in the spotlight as its much loved latern festival begins to shine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Volunteer-run lantern making workshops have started up in Sharrow in the weeks leading up to the community\u2019s annual \u2018spectacular\u2019 lantern carnival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sharrow lantern carnival will be held on March 21st in Sheffield General Cemetery, with \u2018creative, welcoming, and inspiring\u2019 lantern-making workshops being held three times a week on Saturdays, Sundays, and Thursdays in preparation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The carnival is run entirely by volunteers and funded by charitable donations, including the workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tim Dennell, 67, who has attended the event annually since 2016 to take photographs, said: \u201cIt\u2019s popular with families and children as it provides opportunities for creative activities in the weeks leading up to the Carnival as well as the chance to show off their lanterns at the event itself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_1054-1024x658.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_1054-1024x658.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_1054-980x630.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG_1054-480x309.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Screenshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The carnival has been held at Sheffield General Cemetery for the past two years since the carnival struggled to convince police to close the roads for the former procession through Sharrow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Smith, 60, who is the events manager at the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust, said: \u201cIt\u2019s genuinely a really popular event in Sharrow and something that people are desperate to keep going but within all charities things are very difficult at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funding difficulties caused great stress for organisers of the carnival this year, who have had to balance finding more volunteers while not encouraging too much attendance that would put greater pressure on limited resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Smith said: \u201cThere are desperate needs for foodbanks and when people can\u2019t eat properly and children are suffering around our city, those are obviously incredibly important and deserve the money that is available.
