{"id":58522,"date":"2026-03-05T11:41:37","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T11:41:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=58522"},"modified":"2026-03-05T11:41:57","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T11:41:57","slug":"nether-edge-rallies-together-to-protect-endangered-swifts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/05\/nether-edge-rallies-together-to-protect-endangered-swifts\/","title":{"rendered":"Nether Edge rallies together to protect endangered swifts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Nether Edge has joined the growing \u2018Swift Street Movement\u2019, as 19 new boxes and bricks have been installed, ready to welcome returning swifts for spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Fifteen neighbours rallied together to provide this endangered species with homes in time for their return in early May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Swift numbers peak in late June, before beginning their migration back to Africa in early August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Inspired by Hamza Yassin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m0029sth\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m0029sth\">\u2018<em>Hidden Wild Isles\u2019<\/em> series<\/a> on BBC One, residents of the south-west Sheffield neighbourhood joined together on a WhatsApp group chat to organise the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">They partnered with charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sheffieldswiftnetwork\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sheffieldswiftnetwork\">Sheffield Swift Network<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100063832004098\">Nestworks<\/a>, to install boxes and callers &#8211; electronic devices with speakers that play swift colony recordings to attract swifts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Swifts prefer to nest in dark crevices, and now depend almost entirely on our buildings to raise their young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"813\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-1024x813.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-58539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-1024x813.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-768x610.jpg 768w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-1080x857.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-1280x1016.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-980x778.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2-480x381.jpg 480w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Cropped-Peeping-chick-box-\u00a9Birding-Dad-2.jpg 1431w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Peeping chick box, credit: Birding Dad<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Chet Cu\u00f1ago, a member of Sheffield Swift Network, who protects and cares for fallen swifts, said: \u201cSadly, we\u2019ve lost nearly 70% of the UK\u2019s swifts in just 25 years\u2026the small gaps and cavities that swifts have relied on for centuries are disappearing at an industrial rate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">\u201cInstalling swift bricks or boxes to replace lost nests &#8211; is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reverse the decline.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The organisation recently praised Sheffield City Council\u2019s development of Newstead, a former council housing site in Birley, for its inclusion of swift bricks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">They said it was \u201cgreat to see new council housing being built in the city, and better still that it includes swift bricks, bat boxes and hedgehog highways for our endangered urban wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Chet said: \u201cIf every new or refurbished home included these low\u2011cost measures, towns and cities could form a lasting refuge network for wildlife.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Newstead will see 77 new, energy-efficient homes built. They will be a mix of one and two-bed apartments and two, three and four-bed houses, all for social rent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Unlike swift boxes, built-in swift bricks are more permanent nesting options for swifts because they last as long as the building itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">\u201cThe UK is among the most nature\u2011depleted countries on Earth\u2026 Developments like Sheffield City Council\u2019s Newstead scheme in Birley show how small design choices can have a big ecological impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>Top picture credit: Robert Booth<\/em><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nether Edge has joined the growing \u2018Swift Street Movement\u2019, as 19 new boxes and bricks have been installed, ready to welcome returning swifts for spring.
