{"id":58852,"date":"2026-03-10T13:51:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T13:51:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=58852"},"modified":"2026-03-10T13:51:19","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T13:51:19","slug":"deputy-lord-mayor-hails-st-davids-day-event-as-great-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/10\/deputy-lord-mayor-hails-st-davids-day-event-as-great-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Deputy Lord Mayor Hails St David\u2019s Day Event as \u2018Great Success\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Sheffield and District Cambrian Society hosted a hugely successful St David\u2019s Day dinner and concert at Tapton Hall, but calls for more young people to attend the society&#8217;s events.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in 1910, the society brings together people who are native to Wales or are of Welsh descent and regards the event as the \u2018highlight of the year\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former Lord Mayor, Sioned-Mair Richards, President of the society, said: \u201cI love it! It\u2019s quite an old fashioned event but I really enjoy it. There is good food, good company and good music.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Richards addressed the room, speaking of the great success the society has in bringing Sheffield\u2019s Welsh community together. She said: \u201cIf I can\u2019t live in Wales, Sheffield is the next best thing!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olwen Vernon-Hunt, who takes over as president of the society in May, said: \u201cWe need lots of young people, we\u2019d love students!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Sheffield has a Welsh Society, with 60 paying members. Lestyn James, President of the Society said: \u201cMy plan is to create a central website for any welsh people visiting Sheffield.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr James hopes this will incorporate both societies and therefore strengthen their relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An excellent three-course meal was served- the Welsh Lamb a popular option with the members and guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputy Lord Mayor, Andrew Sangar spoke of his fondness for the \u2018Hospitality of the Welsh people\u2019. Councillor Sangar also said: \u201cThe Cambrian Society plays a key role in keeping a strong connection between Wales and Sheffield.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As dinner concluded, Toastmaster Dr John Richards proposed toasts. The first to \u2018His Majesty the King\u2019, who sent \u2018heartfelt warm good wishes\u2019 in an address from the Palace.
