{"id":59002,"date":"2026-03-11T13:55:39","date_gmt":"2026-03-11T13:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=59002"},"modified":"2026-03-11T14:41:02","modified_gmt":"2026-03-11T14:41:02","slug":"sheffield-iranians-continue-celebrations-following-the-death-of-ali-khamenei","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/11\/sheffield-iranians-continue-celebrations-following-the-death-of-ali-khamenei\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield Iranians continue celebrations following the death of Ali Khamenei"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A large crowd gathered outside of Sheffield City Hall on Sunday to continue celebrations after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the joint US and Israeli assassination of Iran\u2019s supreme leader, Sheffield Iranians have been gathering outside City Hall to celebrate since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One participant said: \u201c We are gathering together almost every week on Sundays, in solidarity with the Iranian people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the revolution started in Iran, we are carrying it abroad, so we are Iranian in exile, technically.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ali Khamenei\u2019s death ends a four decade tenure as Iran\u2019s supreme leader, wielding total control over the state and its military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neenee Kaorsand, one of the protestors, said: \u201cAround 1979, some sort of revolution happened in my country, and extremists took over Iran, and it\u2019s been 47 years of them killing people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are not pro-war, we don\u2019t like war, but imagine when people are in front of the government, when they kill their own people, and you are a normal civilian with no weapons or anything, how would you resist?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mojtaba Khamenei will become the third supreme leader of Iran, filling the power void left after his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei\u2019s death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another demonstrator said: \u201cThe US and Israel bombed the IRGC [Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps], and they killed the supreme leader, and that\u2019s a big step towards people\u2019s freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to realise, that these protests at first were the only community we had, because the Iranian government shut down the internet, so we couldn\u2019t talk to family members back home, we couldn\u2019t message, call, see what\u2019s up, and so people gathered to sort of hear what\u2019s going on back home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Islamic Republic of Iran ended the country\u2019s monarchical rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1979. Since then, the Republic has enforced strict Islamic codes of dress and behaviours onto the public, as well as conservative values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Kaorsand said: \u201cWomen had to go, they had rules and regulations with the hijab and everything, so you have no choice, any other religion they cannot practice whatsoever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of writing, the Iranian Health Ministry has stated that more than 12,000 people have been wounded from the strikes, with 1,255 killed in the previous nine days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A large crowd gathered outside of Sheffield City Hall on Sunday to continue celebrations after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
