{"id":59239,"date":"2026-03-13T16:20:25","date_gmt":"2026-03-13T16:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=59239"},"modified":"2026-03-16T15:05:00","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T15:05:00","slug":"sheffield-students-raise-concern-over-rising-house-costs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/13\/sheffield-students-raise-concern-over-rising-house-costs\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield students raise concern over rising house costs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Students in Sheffield said that their finances are being strained by rising rent costs, with many saying it is getting harder to afford everyday living due to an 8% increase in recent years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One second year student at the University of Sheffield, Matty Fox, 20, described the difficulties of rent prices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u2018\u2019Rising costs have affected other parts of my student life, I have to work a part time job to afford university.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018\u2019We had to change where we wanted to live as Broomhill is cheaper than Crookes, meaning we are further away from other students.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Office for National Statistics data rent prices have soared by 8% in the city in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unihomes.co.uk\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.unihomes.co.uk\/\">unihomes.co.uk<\/a> the average rent for student housing in Sheffield is around \u00a3127 per person per week, although prices can vary depending on location and property type.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shared student houses are typically cheaper while private accommodation and studio flats can cost a lot more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some students said that the maintenance loan does not cover the cost of living and rent, calling for their loans to increase alongside the rise of rent.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others said that they have had to take on part-time jobs or move further away from campus to find cheaper house prices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another University of Sheffield student, Lloyd Lee, said: \u2018\u2019Our house costs \u00a3136 a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018\u2019The majority of my loan goes towards rent so I have to budget food and nightlife very carefully.\u2019\u2019&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A first-year student, Norah Caston, 19, detailed the pressure of having to find a house so early on in the academic year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u2018\u2019I think it was difficult as a group of seven because by the time we looked most of the good houses were gone, so we had to get a nine bedroom house and pay extra.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018\u2019I think people rush into it too quickly and you have to choose who to live with after only knowing them for a month or two.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a worker for Broomhill Property Shop said that they have had no complaints from students who had concerns about paying rent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite worries about housing prices, many students have said that Sheffield is still a popular area to study with reasonably priced houses and a large student population.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br><br><br><br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br><br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Students in Sheffield said that their finances are being strained by rising rent costs, with many saying it is getting harder to afford everyday living due to an 8% increase in recent years.\u00a0 One second year student at the University of Sheffield, Matty Fox, 20, described the difficulties of rent prices.&nbsp;
