A rescue centre in Gran Canaria is appealing for greater public support as it works to save and rehome the island’s abandoned dogs to Sheffield and as it fundraises to purchase a new building for the centre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pet Pals GC is a charity that rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes dogs that have been mistreated, and discarded.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Gran Canaria, animal abandonment remains a major issue and many dogs are left without care. The rescue centre steps in to provide treatment, shelter and rehabilitation, before placing them into foster homes and eventually finding them \u201camazing homes\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pet Pals GC is a non-profit charity meaning it relies entirely on donations and income from the charity shop on the island to provide its food, repair and vet bills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The organisation spends around \u00a32,500 on dog food, \u00a37,000 on veterinary bills, and \u00a312,000 on transportation costs to help move animals to safety and new homes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional costs include \u00a3700 for water, cleaning supplies and washing powder for bedding, \u00a3506 for charity shop rent, and \u00a3600 for utility bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the charity, long-term support has become increasingly challenging. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sue Hayes, a volunteer at Pet Pals GC, said: \u201cIt is really difficult to get businesses involved as they have so many areas and charities who ask on a regular basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTimes are tough and getting tougher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are also so many animal charities as well as others so the competition is very high.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rescue centre is currently fundraising and requesting help from local businesses\u00a0 to relocate its facility from its current mountain location to a new site after receiving permission to purchase land for a new rescue centre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move would help improve conditions for the animals and make the operation more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mrs Hayes added: \u201cTrying to find ambassadors as well who have a high profile is very difficult and getting a request directly to them is virtually impossible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHaving a high profile person would make such a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
