Community support has driven the latest restoration efforts at Charnock Recreation Ground, with parents and residents being asked by councillors to help fund pothole repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Birley ward councillors Karen McGowan, Matt Dwyer and Denise Fox reached out to users of the site to help pay for repairs on the road and car park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These included residents on Carter Hall Lane, Charnock & Ridgeway Girls football, Friends of Charnock Recreation Ground and Parents of Charnock Hall Primary Academy.\u00a0The councillors are asking for people to raise \u00a34,830.38 of the \u00a324,830.38 total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gabrielle Firth, parent of Charnock Hall Primary Academy said: \u201cI think the parents should stop complaining about the potholes and mud and continue as we are. Or we all chip in a quid or whatever and help get it made into a car park that will benefit everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The car park is currently under the responsibility of Sheffield City Council\u2019s Parks & Countryside department but Birley Ward councillors have asked for donations to raise enough money for the repairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The plans involve repairing the potholes in the car park as well as the bridleway, which is deemed suitable in its current state, but is not useable for those with children and prams, those attending Charnock Hall Primary Academy, those using NHS services, Hugi-Hub and local residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mrs Firth said: \u201cIt’s the parents – myself included – that caused the problems; believe it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf you check where the gateposts are where people park properly, you can clearly see there\u2019s nowhere near as many issues on that part of land. The issues come from parents turning their car wheels to park in the car park.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The total cost of the work is \u00a324,830.38. Sheffield City Council\u2019s Parks & Countryside department has committed \u00a310,000 to the repairs, and Birley ward councillors have also agreed to fund \u00a310,000. They are hoping the rest can be raised by users of the space. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
They aimed to have the work completed over the two-week Easter period, which was between Friday 27 March and Monday 13 April, but it has yet to be completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
