{"id":59520,"date":"2026-03-17T13:06:46","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T13:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=59520"},"modified":"2026-03-17T13:06:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T13:06:51","slug":"collapsing-school-roof-rescued-with-720k-cash-boost-amid-pupils-and-teachers-safety-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/03\/17\/collapsing-school-roof-rescued-with-720k-cash-boost-amid-pupils-and-teachers-safety-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Collapsing school roof rescued with \u00a3720k cash boost amid pupils and teachers safety concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A crumbling school roof that led to 237 students being evacuated in January has been allocated \u00a3720,000 for a temporary fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council\u2019s Finance &amp; Performance Committee decided unanimously to allocate the money from existing \u201cSchool maintenance funding,\u201d from the Department of Education to Carterknowle Junior School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Martin Phipps of the City ward said: \u201cI know the state of the school\u2019s roof and ceilings are something that has been really concerning for the safety of the children and the staff. It&#8217;s really important that we make that school safe as soon as possible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Phipps added: \u201cIt\u2019s really regrettable how the school has deteriorated to this point- that reflects the underfunding we\u2019ve seen for a long period of time for schools and something we desperately need to change. I\u2019m not sure whether we\u2019ll see that or not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school, located on Bannerdale Road, closed on January 29th and reopened February 2nd, with temporary classrooms utilised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damian Watkinson, the Sheffield Council Finance Manager said: \u201cThis initial phase is to address immediate health and safety issues, prevent further water ingress.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Watkinson added that this: \u201cWill facilitate a full replacement which will be expected in 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Elle Dodd of the Manor Castle ward said: \u201cIt\u2019s important we\u2019re able to secure that for the families, teachers and pupils, and make sure they\u2019re able to go to school safely- that feels a basic requirement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows a Freedom of Information request which found that all 64 schools maintained by the council require some degree of repair, totalling more than \u00a3100 million. Over \u00a345 million of this backlog is classed as urgent. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Dawn Dale, Chair of the Education, Children and Families Committee said: \u201cEnsuring that every child in Sheffield can continue their education safely and without disruption is absolutely vital, and this work represents an important step in securing that. Our priority is always to make sure pupils can learn, thrive, and feel supported.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cllr Dale added: \u201cI know that many parents have understandably felt worried about the situation, and I hope today\u2019s news offers some reassurance.
