A new band in Sheffield hope they are on track for success, claiming the city’s supportive indie music scene has been vital in encouraging fledging artists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Five Over’, is a band that formed in the past few months and recently played their first live event at Sidney and Matilda on Sidney Street, after they met at the University of Sheffield. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jem Elston, 19, the lead singer of the band, said: “I thought it went amazing, everyone played so well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We gained so much confidence throughout it, which I suppose will help with gigs to come.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Gornall, 18, the lead guitarist, said: “It definitely went smoother than the open mic night we tried at the Green Room, on Devonshire Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was nerve-racking at first but it was so much fun, I absolutely loved it and the thrill afterwards was amazing”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jake Fairbairn, 18, the rhythm guitarist, also said: “It went really well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We were obviously nervous but it went quite smoothly and I think all the practice paid off.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: “It was good to have so many familiar faces, everyone was really supportive.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An audience member, Flo Northcott, said she “would definitely see them again.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since forming the band, all members have been working towards more goals they want to achieve as an independent band in a city with great music history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Fairbairn said: “The aim right now is to play more gigs and write more music.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Gornall added: “Hopefully at some point we can get some of our music recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Maybe we could even release a single or album, that’s the dream.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The near future is looking promising for independent bands, with live music venues all over Sheffield offering a platform for anyone to try make a name for themselves in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Right now we’ve got a show lined up headlining at the Washington, on Fitzwilliam Street, on April 1st” said Mr Fairbairn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Elston added: “Sheffield is such a great city for bands like ourselves to begin their journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s rich music history and hospitality to new bands is so helpful in creating a good culture around music here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
