The University of Sheffield cheerleading team demonstrated inclusivity as well as talent during their half time performance at a Varsity event on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While football, rugby and lacrosse brought students from across Sheffield to Hallam Sports Park, a cheer performance by the University\u2019s \u2018Chrome\u2019 team integrated social members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The unusual inclusion of social members sets a new standard for University sports, giving them a chance to develop and demonstrate their own talents in a competitive environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matilda Ellis, 19, a social member who performed on the day said: \u201cChrome has made me feel so included and increased my confidence so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think this year with the social team has really allowed me to develop my skills. This has definitely made me want to continue with cheer and audition next year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students across Sheffield look forward to Varsity all year long, with the biggest sporting rivalries between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam sports teams going head to head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With many students trying out for sports teams at the beginning of the year, it can be discouraging to not be selected for the main teams. Some students drop out of social teams if they are not selected for competitive events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the sun out and shining, bringing the perfect weather for the competitive events, teams prepared for their Varsity clash but the day was not without its challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The men\u2019s rugby had run over its expected timing, forcing cheer to move to the lacrosse pitch for their performance.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the move, cheer ended the day as the only Varsity team to include not just their best athletes but also students passionate about sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Audience members were in awe of the performance. Emma McCorry, 18, said: \u201cI originally went to support the University football team but just couldn\u2019t take my eyes off of the cheer display\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josie Wagner, Chrome social squad member said: \u201cIt was amazing to be able to perform at varsity and represent the University of Sheffield in the biggest sporting event of the year for most of us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day ended in a cheer triumph for the University of Sheffield as they also dominated the field events, winning the day over Sheffield Hallam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
