{"id":60063,"date":"2026-04-20T14:51:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:51:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=60063"},"modified":"2026-04-20T14:51:39","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T14:51:39","slug":"the-93-million-question-is-sheffields-electric-bus-revolution-really-worth-the-price-tag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/20\/the-93-million-question-is-sheffields-electric-bus-revolution-really-worth-the-price-tag\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u00a393 million question: Is Sheffield\u2019s electric bus revolution really worth the price tag?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cff39a386235804e45a72668d98a7a74\">More than 180 new electric buses are coming to Sheffield in 2027, costing \u00a392.7 million in total, with an additional \u00a326 million for infrastructure upgrades, but the plans are already being questioned by some users.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-280ac90176950cf6727aea335c60aec5\">The UK Government has contributed \u00a333.4 million to this project, and the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has provided \u00a358.3 million.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ffcab7a400b24bdeeee07c7e9e47708a\">The Government\u2019s contribution accounts for 40% of the \u00a373.2 million package for zero-emission buses across England, building off its zero-emission Bus Regional Areas Programme, and has funded over 2,500 cleaner buses nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0ea5c2d678d36337fc7ee939c8ec0079\">When speaking to a few bus users, questions about the reliability of these buses became quite common, as well as whether the amount of money being invested is justifiable.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d6cbe7c2ffc3b3bff3d7766d6ed3f261\">ShefLive spoke to Mr Alan Eckersley, 79, who said: \u201cWill they be here on time, will it make any difference?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0387a225c57cad23b71914e6d88ded9a\">Mr Eckersley said that the current buses are either late or never turn up, and they only come once an hour.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d39809cbfc0baa9e7263828e133fcd10\">When asked if he thought the buses would improve public transport, he said: \u201cAbsolutely not, no.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-426038fb9b6d6e17b089a2d4442ca221\">He said: \u201cWhat about roadworks, potholes, and things like that? You\u2019ve got to look after them, don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"776\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_1389-776x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60064\" style=\"width:637px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bus users in Sheffield City Centre <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4c04b312999a6c9658cf6a24beddc036\">The SYMCA has also invested \u00a326 million to upgrade infrastructure and prepare Olive Grove Bus Depot for these new buses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-40cbf3d86e36cb1db4c6624814437e93\">Councillor Tom Hunt, announcing the plan, said: &#8220;We&#8217;ve done a lot of work in this city over the last few years to drive down air pollution, this will allow us to go further.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-740cb1b285df03ea91452ba6882f8afa\">However, some bus drivers also shared the same scepticisms and criticisms as bus users. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-09ada2faa1f12cfe572904582754653e\">One bus driver for \u2018First Bus\u2019, whose name we have decided not to disclose, said: \u201cYou don&#8217;t know if they\u2019re going to be reliable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ad21355f9c56780858fc52f4fcd83008\">While there won\u2019t be much change to his job, there will be a lot more training, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3237940f1270c2905f82e4305b51d8b6\">When asked if this was a good use of government money, He said: \u201cNo, not at all.\u201d and said, \u201cI think the tram network should have been worked on before the buses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3a95605a1b0714c8d4f1a8f5a821ea13\">Reports say that the performance of the tram network is poor, with punctuality issues, aging infrastructure and staff shortages.&nbsp;With South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard offering his apologies for the issues of reliability in November 2025. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e4d7eac6e9522a6c6c1dfdc95d769522\">So the question remains, is Sheffield\u2019s electric bus revolution worth the price tag?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color
