{"id":60565,"date":"2026-05-12T12:07:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T12:07:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=60565"},"modified":"2026-05-12T12:07:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T12:07:43","slug":"sheffield-celebrates-world-championship-run-in-with-the-return-of-the-snooker-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/12\/sheffield-celebrates-world-championship-run-in-with-the-return-of-the-snooker-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheffield celebrates World Championship run-in with the return of the Snooker Market"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Sheffield Snooker Market has returned this weekend from Friday 1 May to Sunday on Fargate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market is aiming to celebrate and welcome world culture, crafts and cuisine as the 2026 World Snooker Championship comes to an end this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market has become a staple of the tournament experience, with over 12,000 fans able to soak up the atmosphere outsisde The Crucible Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The market offers food and drink stalls from all over the world, serving as a vibrant cultural hub to help rejoice in the cultural importance and diversity the Championship brings to Sheffield with such a wide range of cuisines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield has held the rights to the Snooker World Championship since 1977, and have just secured the rights to keep holding the competition up until 2045, with the option to extend to 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision keeps the competition happening at its intimate home, The Crucible Theatre. With official redevelopment plans worth \u00a345 million to occur over the next coming years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate Josephs, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, said: \u201cSheffield is the home of snooker, much like Wimbledon is to tennis and Aintree is to the Grand National. The World Snooker Championships and Sheffield go hand in hand.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Securing these rights also brings economic and cultural integrity to Sheffield, with the competition bringing in over \u00a34 million anually for the city and further attracting 12,000 visitors from around the world to come and watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kate Josephs added: &#8220;We know what the tournament means to the people of Sheffield, the players that come to compete and all the fans that watch the tournament across the globe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans have gathered around the Theatre and the Market this weekend to excitedly watch the final few days of the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Snooker fan James Roberts summed up the mood to ShefLive: &#8220;The Crucible is the main home of Snooker, Sheffield is the home of Snooker and we proudly take that on and all the opportunities and revenue it brings to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The atmosphere and buzz it brings to the city is incredible.
