{"id":60658,"date":"2026-04-29T13:14:48","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=60658"},"modified":"2026-04-29T13:14:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:14:50","slug":"green-belt-saga-dividing-sheffield-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/29\/green-belt-saga-dividing-sheffield-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"Green Belt saga dividing Sheffield politics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Proposals to build on some of the city&#8217;s Green Belt have split the political landscape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sheffield Greenbelt Alliance have accused the council of \u201cwanton hypocrisy\u201d after saying they should learn from the lessons of the tree-felling scheme which ran between 2012 and 2018 and resulted in protests across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for the campaign group said: &#8220;The council might apologise for their failures around the tree-felling, but they do not seem to learn.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hollywood actor Sean Bean recently donated \u00a35,000 to the Save S13 Greenbelt campaign who are fighting against more than 1,500 homes being built on green belt land in Handsworth as part of the Local Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Local Plan aims to set out a 15-year framework for housing, employment, and infrastructure in Sheffield. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sheffield Green Party recently issued a defence of their vote for the new Sheffield Local Plan, which allows for some building on the Green Belt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By agreeing to the current local plan, the Greens argue they are legally locking the door against a \u201cwhim\u201d from central government that they say could demand 13,000 homes on the Sheffield Green Belt if the plan fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sheffield Local Plan has been supported by the majority of Labour and Green Party councillors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK have opposed the plan and the Sheffield Community Councillors Group have voted against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan allocates over 350 pieces of land for future development with a focus on reusing previously developed brownfield land in the urban parts of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are 14 Green Belt sites proposed for development with a total of 3,539 homes (representing approximately 3.5% of Sheffield\u2019s Green Belt overall).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield City Council says it has exhausted all of its brownfield sites, as in total the city is expected to build 38,000 homes by 2039.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council also says it would review the plan every five years which means they could respond to changing needs over time as an alternative to being committed to policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan faces its final council vote for adoption in summer 2026, which will follow a 6-week consultation period concluding on May 5, 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Proposals to build on some of the city&#8217;s Green Belt have split the political landscape.&nbsp; The Sheffield Greenbelt Alliance have accused the council of \u201cwanton hypocrisy\u201d after saying they should learn from the lessons of the tree-felling scheme which ran between 2012 and 2018 and resulted in protests across the city.
