{"id":60670,"date":"2026-05-06T13:42:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T13:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=60670"},"modified":"2026-05-06T13:42:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T13:42:37","slug":"9-35m-e-bike-scheme-set-to-launch-in-2027-in-sheffield-what-does-this-mean-for-local-cycling-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/06\/9-35m-e-bike-scheme-set-to-launch-in-2027-in-sheffield-what-does-this-mean-for-local-cycling-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00a39.35m e-bike scheme set to launch in 2027 in Sheffield &#8211; What does this mean for local cycling communities?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Public e-bikes are returning to Sheffield to battle the city&#8217;s hills after an eight-year break since their last appearance due to crime rates.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sheffield council has announced that a new scheme will be launched in the city allowing people to hire bikes from hundreds of locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter Billington, 69, who lives in Ranmoor, is a member of cycling club Whirlow Wheelers, a casual biking community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding to the upcoming scheme, he said: &#8220;The more people that cycle, the better the provision that will be made for cyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is some concern though that people who are not regular cyclists won\u2019t feel safe on many routes and won\u2019t want to use them in the winter when it\u2019s cold and wet so they\u2019ll just lie idle.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018 the Ofo yellow bike scheme ended due to immense vandalism. A high proportion of the 1,000 bikes involved were damaged.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council is aiming to run the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.find-tender.service.gov.uk\/Notice\/065234-2025\">Sheffield eBike Hire Scheme Soft Market Test<\/a> for three years, starting in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The launch of the e-bikes aims to battle the city&#8217;s traffic, reduce pollution, and tackle Sheffield&#8217;s hills as a hope of improving the local environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project aims to introduce around 950 e-bikes for public hire from approximately 320 parking locations, covering all neighbourhoods including deprived areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city council is investing \u00a32 million into the scheme, arising concern from cyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Billington adds: &#8220;I completely disagree with the city council providing \u00a32million to set the scheme up \u2013 from a cyclist&#8217;s point of view there is a much higher priority for spending this money which is to repair the potholes in the roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These are incredibly dangerous for cyclists \u2013 particularly when riding downhill \u2013 as hitting a deep pothole can cause a rider to be thrown off their bike onto the road and potentially into the path of vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of the council&#8217;s Transport Vision, it said: &#8220;We are committed to supporting the transition to electric and low-emission modes of travel and becoming a leading city in the journey to net zero.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It added: &#8220;Lessons from previous schemes are being incorporated&#8230; with fines issued if bikes are not left in a designated space.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Public e-bikes are returning to Sheffield to battle the city&#8217;s hills after an eight-year break since their last appearance due to crime rates.\u00a0 Sheffield council has announced that a new scheme will be launched in the city allowing people to hire bikes from hundreds of locations.
