A road in Park Hill has closed due to antisocial behaviour amid discussions about creating a preventative \u2018pocket park\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On 20 April, the section of South Street between Shrewsbury Road and Norfolk Road was boarded up, preventing all vehicle access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Councillor Ellie Dodd has stated that the issue is \u201cnot young people\u201d, but mainly involves adults of legal driving age. She added that whilst some visit for legitimate reasons, others purposefully come to engage in anti-social behaviour. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier this week, Cllr Dodd shared a photo online of people enjoying the landscape suggesting the closure has already had a positive impact on the area’s atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, some residents and workers have expressed concerns that the measures could simply move the problem elsewhere. ShefLive visited the area earlier this week to get a sense of how locals were feeling on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Sheffield City Council worker, Sonny Gaughan said \u201cclosing it off might just be kicking can down road\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local businesses have also expressed mixed views. Julia, who works at South Street Kitchen, said the changes could improve the environment but may also affect trade. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s good because currently there’s lots of people smoking weed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“But I worry there’ll be less parking for customers which could affect business\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The road closure is expected to remain in place for up to 18 months under an Experimental Traffic Order. During this time, residents and community groups are campaigning for the space to be transformed into a small public park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One group, Friends of Skyline Pocket Park, is advocating for a design similar to those introduced on Matilda Street and Nursery Street, which residents say have helped improve safety and increase public use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supporters argue the scheme could create opportunities for exercise, active travel and leisure whilst tackling the current behavioural issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Currently the renovation and redesign of the general Park Hill Estate is worth \u00a3120 million, with residents hoping smaller projects like this will build on recent improvements and help address ongoing issues in specific areas. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
