Thirty seven cameras will be installed on Monday to track travel preferences in Sheffield city centre in an attempt to improve public transport and reduce emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City Centre Access and Movement plan – approved by the Council last December – will improve public transport and make more efficient use of road space over the next 15 years, in anticipation of 20,000 new homes and thousands of new jobs arriving in Sheffield by 2040.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ben King, Strategic Transport Planning Manager, said: “It will make the city centre more accessible and welcoming for all and enable the economic and cultural heart of Sheffield to thrive.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three priority areas include West street, Arundel gate and city arrival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Haley Fletcher, 25, a student at the University of Sheffield said: “I think reducing the number of cars would be good, especially if you look at the stretch from the Uni to Endcliffe, its always massively built up with traffic there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The people in five cars could fit onto just one bus.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Council surveys indicated that 57% of people would like to be able to cycle more in the city centre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Christine, a 68 year old retiree, said: “I think there’s quite a lot of stuff for cyclists. They’ve put a lot of new bike racks and stuff like that I don’t think they really need anymore.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2025 City Centre Access and Movement Plan estimated the cost of improving public transport across Sheffield to be hundreds of millions of pounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Members of the public have voiced concerns about whether the scheme is likely to increase council tax and whether commuters are likely to shift to public transport. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Callum Sturgeon, 26, a senior technician at Sheffield University, said: “Other risks I guess would be anyone with disabilities that might need access to a car, if you’re going to add loads of buses loads of cycle lanes, is it going to restrict their ability to get in and around the centre?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Personally I think people would still drive just because of the convenience of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The only way to really enforce people doing it would be to increase the lower emissions zones or reduce the threshold so only electric vehicles for example could go without congestion charges.”
