{"id":60892,"date":"2026-05-05T12:38:53","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T12:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=60892"},"modified":"2026-05-05T12:39:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T12:39:17","slug":"world-snooker-championship-comes-to-a-close-at-the-crucible-theatre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/05\/world-snooker-championship-comes-to-a-close-at-the-crucible-theatre\/","title":{"rendered":"World Snooker Championship comes to a close at the Crucible Theatre"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the second youngest player took the title at the WSC we interviewed fans gathered at the Winter Gardens to watch the event for free with family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the bad weather, people were still out in the city centre to enjoy the finals of the 17 day long tournament, which saw Wu Yize, 22, become the second youngest person to win the WSC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joanne Wilson, 43, a resident of Sheffield, said: &#8220;Seeing people bring their families down to enjoy the game is lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really glad to be able to watch the sport in the city I live in.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Winter Gardens showed every match in the championship for free in their outdoor screening area, letting people who didn&#8217;t manage to get a ticket still enjoy the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside the gardens snooker tables were on offer to let people play the sport for free, along with a visual representation of the tournament brackets with signatures from the players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_4422-2-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-60948\" style=\"width:568px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_4422-2-980x735.jpeg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/IMG_4422-2-480x360.jpeg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reggie Wilson, 47, said: &#8220;It&#8217;s nice to come and feel a part of the game even if you don&#8217;t have tickets.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans also had the option the watch for free from the Cue Zone area at the Crucible Theatre itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wu Yize beat England&#8217;s Shaun Murphy with a frame score of 18-17, securing the \u00a3500,000 prize money and international recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes following the announcement that Sheffield will remain the home of the championship, as the Crucible is due to undergo a \u00a345 million redevelopment starting in summer 2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The iconic venue has been the host of the championship every year since 1977 and the revamp means this will remain the case until 2045, with an option for 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan North, 19, a student in Sheffield, said: &#8220;As a big snooker fan, it means a lot to me that I get to be in the same place that houses the sport every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I love the community aspect of it, especially when everyone comes together to watch a game.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tournament is due to move to an alternate location in 2029 to allow time for the renovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press release, Councillor Tom Hunt, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: &#8220;Snooker is part of Sheffield&#8217;s identity, and I&#8217;m incredibly proud that it will continue to be played here.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the second youngest player took the title at the WSC we interviewed fans gathered at the Winter Gardens to watch the event for free with family and friends.
