{"id":60933,"date":"2026-05-12T11:51:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T11:51:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=60933"},"modified":"2026-05-12T12:53:47","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T12:53:47","slug":"reform-uk-candidate-who-flirted-with-far-right-ideology-elected-in-woodhouse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/12\/reform-uk-candidate-who-flirted-with-far-right-ideology-elected-in-woodhouse\/","title":{"rendered":"Reform UK Candidate who &#8216;flirted with Far Right ideology&#8217; elected in Woodhouse"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Nathaniel Menday has been elected in Woodhouse with almost 2000 votes despite Hope Not Hate, an organisation combatting far right extremism, reporting that he described himself as an &#8216;ethno-nationalist&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"749\" src=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1000025222-1-1024x749.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1000025222-1-980x717.jpg 980w, https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1000025222-1-480x351.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo of a Reform UK campaign sign &#8211; taken by Donovan Livesey <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Revealed by the Times, Mr Menday is also alleged to have said Berlin&#8217;s Olympiastadion was built by &#8216;real visionaries&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stadium was designed by Albert Speer who was convicted of crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg trials. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the article Coun Menday also criticised the Jewish community over policies on open borders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The local elections took place on 7 May with Reform making great gains, winning over 1200 seats and taking control of ten councils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sheffield Liberal Democrats condemned Mr Menday over his hateful words and called for the Reform party to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have called for Reform UK to withdraw all support for Menday, and commit he will not be granted the whip if elected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also have said Menday must acknowledge he cannot represent the people Woodhouse and commit to standing down if he is elected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When they approached him for comment he apologised for bringing Reform &#8216;into disrepute&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Yorkshire Post also report that Mr Menday asked a fellow Sheffield United fan to add a sun wheel emblem to a flag. The sun wheel has been associated with the far right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said he enjoyed, &#8216;risky humour and pushing boundaries&#8217;, and, &#8216;I have flirted with what could reasonably be referred to as a Far Right ideology but have come to reject its core tenets&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Menday backtracked on the comments he made, said during The Times interview: &#8216;I am not anti-Semitic nor do I have Nazi sympathies.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added: &#8216;I have always been motivated by love, not hate.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Yorkshire Post spoke to Reform Deputy Leader Richard Tice who defended Mr Menday.
