{"id":61094,"date":"2026-05-06T15:19:15","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T15:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/?p=61094"},"modified":"2026-05-06T15:19:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T15:19:21","slug":"health-report-highlights-concerning-issues-in-one-of-sheffields-most-deprived-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shef-live.co.uk\/index.php\/2026\/05\/06\/health-report-highlights-concerning-issues-in-one-of-sheffields-most-deprived-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"Health report highlights concerning issues in one of Sheffield\u2019s most deprived areas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Language barriers and a lack of digital literacy means key health advice and information isn\u2019t reaching residents in Tinsley, according to findings by Healthwatch Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report brought to light problems including poor transport access to the city centre and a shortage of groups and activities in the area leading to social wellbeing needs not being met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statutory organisation said: \u201cBased on our findings, we have made a number of recommendations to local and regional service providers and commissioners of health and social care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhere the findings are broader than statutory health and social care services, we will also make sure the report is seen by other stakeholders who are working with communities to improve neighbourhoods in Sheffield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to improve health and wellbeing for people living in Tinsley, and also hope that these findings can influence wider work being done to improve population health at a neighbourhood level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The five findings showed that there is a low awareness and uptaking of some services &#8211; adult social care and mental health support in particular &#8211; and a low identification of carers which puts additional strain on families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Healthwatch Sheffield had carried out interviews and conversations with around 60 local residents, asking about health and social care services, as well as the wider factors that influence their health and wellbeing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The independent body is not part of the NHS or Sheffield City Council, and was officially established on April 13, 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tinsley is a neighbourhood in the north east of the city located in the Darnall ward which is in the top 10% of the most deprived areas in the country, according to Darnall Well Being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The area contains the Meadowhall shopping centre, junction 34 of the M1 and is full of industry with the Tinsley Cooling Towers once towering over the streets before being demolished in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s known for having filthy air, nicknamed \u201cToxic Tinsley\u201d by locals and the air quality was so poor it caused Tinsley Nursery and Infants on Siemens Close to close in 2014 and was moved further from the motorway.
